I bought this and it gave me a promo code under which it said "Your codes must be redeemed within 30 days"

Use the alternating technique. Year 1 you be the primary and your partner the secondary. Year 2 switch , your partner be the primary and you secondary. This way you can always get new member promos. I have been using a Free or fully rebated membership (one year even a money maker) for past 5 years now.

Is this $40 reward for Plus membership still being offered? Right now, the Stack Social page makes no mention of any cash rewards...it seems to be just a straight up $20 for basic Club membership and $50 for the Plus membership.

Costco has far better pricing on higher quality stuff, especially relatively healthy or organic foods. If you're more into junk foods and processed foods, BJ's will do. The main advantage of BJ's is that in my area, they offer gas whereas my local Costcos don't. And of course BJ's does close later in the day and on weekends, so it's more convenient.
