So, my wife wanted a new phone and heard about a deal on the Pixel 9 Pro XL at Verizon. We went in (a corporate store in NY) and got very good service. Plan payment was supposed to be $33.33/mo, and they gave her a credit for $33.33/mo. We did have to upgrade her plan (for $10 less) and got insurance on the new phone, and we're tied in for 36 months, but out of pocket were taxes for $164, and the insurance was extra, so our plan went up $15.
At this point I said: "Hey, can I get a new phone too?" Yes...another $15.
So, the total cost is about $30/mo for 36 months ($1080 monthly payments + $328 for taxes - $1408 for two excellent new phones with insurance an enhanced plan (Unlimited Welcome Plan, with Travel Pass (foreign country use)) And no Trade-In.

Agreed about the contract. Good deal. These days, I'm happy to lock in for 2 years for the right deal. For whatever reason, 3 years seems too long though even for a good deal.

Yeah, I've always bought a discounted phone and not had a contract. But wife/kid are always on a contract, so...

LOL they want me to upgrade to a plan that costs $20 more per month, per line (i.e., a $720 incremental spend over the next 3 years), in order to get $800 in credits and be locked into the phone for 3 full years. What a shame. There hasn't been a single good deal on the P9P since it came out.

Got me into an authorized (not run by) Verizon store in CA. Such a painful process, but cost me $10 total over 36mo in the end *($1199 credit to phone cost). Oh, but I still owed $200 on my Pixel 7 which I had to pay to Verizon. The camera cracked last week. The store surprised me with a $90 required set-up fee and wouldn't budge. I was too exhausted to walk away, plus had the SIM already transferred. I knew about Verizon's $35 activation fee already. And tax of course.
