lol yes I remember playing RPG Maker 95 - I had to download it from Kazaa or Limewire, can't remember which one, because there was no official translation or port. It was hacked, translated, and released by some Russian guy named "Don Miguel". the Internet was so wild back in the day
I don't recall it being 30 years old but I was more speaking to how simple this version appears to make things. Basically the difference between pounding out HTML code by hand (your '30 year old' version) vs dragging / dropping things into a doc to make a website in 5 minutes without any specialized skills (VX Ace).
But hey, even if I was that old...what would be the problem?
Wow talk about blast to the past. Messed with rpgmaker2000 20+ years ago and had completely forgotten about. Made a town and initital storyline, then realized it would take way too long to make a game so I quit. 20 years later with a family and job?? Click install.
It's not the most current version, also about 13 years old. But we'll see, maybe I'll whip up a town for my kids to walk around in, put their friends in the game just for funsies

RPG Maker has been around for like 30 years. Are you that old?

I remember fooling around with RM2k back in the day. The measure of how 1337 your game was centered on whether you were willing to effectively disregard the game's built-in battle system (which used the Dragon Quest interface with no visible party members) in favor of building a "custom", side-view battle system from scratch resembling your Final Fantasy's.
Based on a cursory read of the Wikipedia[wikipedia.org] page, it looks like DQ-style battles are still the norm in RM VX, and it looks llike side-view battles don't come built-in until RPG Maker MV.
So, there ya go. I'm not gonna argue with free, but if you actually intend to try to make games with this rather than just fooling around with the GUI, you may wanna plop down the five bucks for RPG Maker MV instead and get side-view battles without having to do 30 hours of custom programming work.

You could download it directly from his website in 1996, at least I did as a 10 year old kid using AOL.

Edit: Oops. I missed that it is pricing it this way because I already have MZ in my library.
