On paper, the specs look great, and is a better value than other WiFi 7 routers. Plus, Asus has free protection, etc. and a good reputation. And the "expert" review (dongknowstech) said it was good.

I bought it for $183 (15% off $219 for an old router trade in, + $5 member certificate at BestBuy) and tried it for 2 weeks. It was problem after problem (disconnects, thermal errors, core spikes, unstable speed). The forums are full of frustrated users with these problems. I tried a second unit (good value, worth a shot) and had the same issues. Replaced it with another brand wifi 7 router and it has been reliable with a stronger signal (it's a TP-Link unit, not everyone may buy with the ban threats)

Here's [asus.com]10 pages of frustrated posts on one thread alone. . There are other threads

Maybe a firmware issue will fix this in the future, but it's not worth it for now. I'm hoping Asus will fix it and it'll be a good choice in the future.

Plus it has been this price for a few weeks now, so I'm guessing it'll be available at this price in the future.

Buy be88u, not this one. This one does no support merlin firmware at least for now. Also speed is worse than an ax86u few years ago. In the end be88u + ax86u as aimesh to get 1.6 to 1.8gbps full house.
Any recommendations that aren't $130 more?

Merlin will probably come for this router eventually, since it's not an obscure model and the price point is right on target.

I assume most people are after the 10Gb and 2.5Gb ethernet ports. In which case, sticking with 6 or 6E is a better option for now.

I also bought this and it's been pretty stable for me. I bought because its the cheapest Asus 10G + Wifi 7 triband (yes I know 2x2 vs 3x3) with 1x 10G and 4x 2.5G (moved to 2.5G/10G home LAN after adding a 10G NAS). I'd prefer 2x 10G for wan + connecting a 10G switch, but since my WAN speed is still 1G I use one of the 2.5G ports for WAN and the 10G port for my 10G switch. I'm seeing the log temp errors / high CPU usage posted by others but after a FW update plus factory reset I have all cores running around 25%. Router FW is pretty good from a UI and feature perspective. Like the mobile app. I've used DDWRT before but ended up returning to stock Asus since its gets updated regularly and there aren't a lot of features I miss (not a power user, but have a lot of WAN/LAN traffic). Loved the AX86U style both for smaller footprint and stability / performance. Hope this one becomes a worth succesor especially after more FW updates.

Did you check it after a bit after the reset? Right after my hard reset (after FW update, and several other times), thermal errors disappeared and core usage dropped, but after a few hours, they all came back. Hope yours is still stable, but I didn't have good luck on 2 different units.
Just sharing to warn potential buyers of what they may face. Good luck, hope yours continues to be stable!

Agreed, I had some similar stability issues with AX86 and I upgraded to Asuswrt-Merlin firmware and its been stable. There are some BE models supported
RT-BE96U 3006.102.3
GT-BE98_PRO 3006.102.3
RT-BE86U 3006.102.3
RT-BE88U 3006.102.3
- Let some time pass and allow others to debug as well as a decent price drop

I've only had mine for 5 days, after seeing this dropped back down to $220.
Honestly, it's stable and fast, pushing 160MB/s for SMB (Windows wired to Windows wireless) transfers.
Speeds are exactly what FIOS can provide me: 940 down and 940 up. The settings transferred right over from my AX-86u.

All of my 2.5gb devices and switches are humming along at the rated speeds.
One of the best things is the flexible WAN input configs. WAN can be 10 Gb for something like Xfinity's new 5.5, 4, and 3Gb services or, it can be the primary 2.5Gb port, allowing for slower ISP connections to not waste a 10Gb port.
(By contrast, my TP-Link BE11000 can only use the 10Gb port for WAN or upstream when functioning in AP-only mode. I'm not sure if it's possible to change at all. It's labeled WAN on the back vs the WAN/LAN designation on the ASUS.) Oh, and for future plans, I was going to add Cox 2Gb service. This router can both load balance and fail over… so 3/1.1 Gb max or 1/1 Gb max/2/0.1 Gb in failover mode. The USB implementation is fast. It can hit 240 MBps on 2.5Gb connections. I haven't tested the 10 Gb, yet for USB.
My iPhone 16 Pro Max hits exactly the FiOS-limited speeds as well around 930-940 Mbps.

Honestly, there isn't much to dislike here.
The only thing that annoyed me is the baffling decision to not include NIC teaming/bonding for any port. This would have allowed for a dual-2.5Gb NAS to run at 5Gb.
It is an ASUS router, though… which means it's the opposite of user friendly. Configuring MLO was particularly weird as it has to be set in two completely different sections. They also have an 'MLO fronthaul' option which isn't given a description in the web UI.

Otherwise… fast, stable, complicated, configurable, all-round great router so far.

Mine had stability issues that required too many reboots. Played around with the wireless settings specially disabling features that were hogging processing resources and it's been stable and consistently fast since.

I've tried a few, hydra 6e $60, rt86u $500, and a be5000 $35 to try to increase my file transfer speeds locally to a wired laptop.

Hydra wifi 6e 30 MB/s wireless / 90 MB/s wired.
RT-BE96u wifi 7 30 MB/s wireless / 60 MB/s wired,
BE5000 wifi 7 35 MB/s wireless / didnt test wired

The be5000 lacks 6ghz so its surprising that its the fastest.

Bought this router for a friend, WFH, big bandwidth needs

Updated firmware (v3.0.0.6.102_37435) immediately due to widespread stability issue reports, set up 6ghz, 5ghz and 2.4ghz networks to connect work PC, mobile devices and IoT devices, respectively. Easy to setup, easy to update firmware, reports are its rock solid

Wifi 7 6ghz range feels mediocre (vs 5ghz Wifi 6) but I couldn't say if that is the router or the nature of a higher bandwidth wireless connection
That's the nature of higher frequencies. 2.4ghz goes far and goes through most things. 5ghz is faster but more sensitive to obstructions. 6ghz doesn't really go through walls.

Doesn't this one have a weaker 5ghz band than others?
Not necessarily weaker. But it only has 2 5ghz antennas and 2 6ghz antennas, where more expensive devices like the BE96U have 4 and 4. Fewer radios means less bandwidth, and also less flexibility in how you can position the antennas to eliminate dead spots.

I was just going to say, this only has 2x2 MU-MIMO on each band, was expecting 4x4

Adding radios is an expensive feature. Tri-band 4x4 starts on the BE96U, which is twice the price. Even the $300+ BT10 is 4x4 on 5GHz and 6GHz, but only 2x2 2.4GHz.

unless you have some specific reason for WiFi 7 this very moment in time, this is a easy pass.

I sent this router back. I'd say I'm somewhat savvy with this tech but this router dropped connection and when we would browse let's say to Google shopping it was preventing us from going to that items webpage. Tried on numerous devices, same thing with no web security setup on router. Sadly you cannot flash this unit for whatever reason.

Typically, only when you also have 6Ghz enabled alongside it.

People don't seem to realize that while some devices allow you to run both simultaneously, you really shouldn't.

Even trying to hotspot with 6Ghz on a mobile device informs you that it's going to turn off other radios to accomplish it.

If you need to support 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz, and 6Ghz simultaneously, you're better off running two or even three routers.
That couldnt be more wrong, and wifi 7 MLO networks literally use all three bands at the same time.

I bought this on sale at Best Buy 3 weeks ago for 219.99. Used it for a week and 3 times it would just stop communicating with my xfinity gateway. I thought it was a gateway issue so I called xfinity and they set me up with their newest model. Set it up, few hours later same problem. Yes - I rebooted and even did a factory reset on both gateways and the Asus router. Firmware was updated too. Maybe I got a lemon but ended up just returning it. Im actually just using my new gateway as my router and it has surprisingly exceeded my expectations.
