google reddit hepa levoit for the full story. in a nutshell when I originally bought this exact model several years ago it was advertised as hepa and so were all the filters. then a year later levoit quietly wiped all mentions of the word hepa from their website and from amazon for the model and for the replacement filters. Levoit got sued by Dyson I think for their false advertising use of the term hepa and rather than fight it they quietly wiped all mentions of hepa from all of their cylindrical models. Which for a filter company as large as Levoit is sus to not fight back. Instead they launched a new hepa model that no longer uses cylindrical filters and uses flat ones instead.
Third party testing found their machine with their filters didn't meet HEPA filtration standards and their cadr was lower than advertised. I suppose they could be providing updated filters now.

I looked into it further. Only sleep mode is HEPA. Normal mode and above are not HEPA. Which means anything other than very slow speed causes some particle leakage to get past the filters. Personally I never use its sleep mode because it makes an annoying coil wine noise that's noticeable when it's turned off or when the fan isn't spinning fast enough to drown it out.
