Turns out that was fake news and the scientist misplaced a decimal point. True story.

Some says, It's best to avoid using wooden utensils because food can stick to them and harbor bacteria. Plastic or silicone utensils can also be problematic since small bits can break off and end up in your food, which isn't safe. Additionally, some stainless steel utensils from certain places may not be the healthiest choice. So, what about using your fingers?
Me in for one 😁
my mother threw all her black utensils out, maybe she'll like the taupe ones?
great price.

while in one area it says dishwasher safe, another says hand wash only. Very confusing.

Just saying this, if you have any black plastic utensils, throw them away. If you have any from the dollar store, toss them. I don't know about this particular post, but any start to switch is better than nothing. It was tough for me, as I hate throwing away useful items, but health is more important in fact, I removed them all, placed in a bag in the garage, after a month, I didn't miss them and boom, gone!
Why??

Probably because they're just trash and unhealthy. Mine personally would soak up every damn thing imaginable and probably leech plastic into my food just looking at them.

The black utensil thing was a bit overblown. It wasn't a really extensive study so we still don't really know the true danger, and on top of that, they got their numbers wrong and exaggerated their proposed risk by about 100x.

I understand not wanting to risk it but not sure it's a throw them in the trash situation.

Calling it fake news is a little silly. The numbers they used were an order of magnitude off (10x, not 100x as someone else mentioned), but the underlying point that they were finding concerning levels of carcinogenic fire retardant chemicals leeching out of the plastics remains.

Just use wood lol

Silicone is way better than plastic. Way more durable. Plastic always gets burned away and you end up with microplastics in your food. Silicone doesn't do that.

Yeah, worst is those sillicone spatula with plastic handles. Always end up burning them by resting them against the stove. Nothing happens to the sillicone though.

Anti-black racism, pure and simple. Just kidding. Black plastic is made from plastic that's been recycled from appliances such as computers. These plastics have been treated with a fire retardant. A recent study found the chemical in many black plastic kitchenware and dinnerware. It's especially concerning because these items are often subjected to heat and/or acidic foods, which may cause chemicals to leech out.

After the initial study was published, the authors discovered a mistake. Apparently, the amount of chemicals released was not as bad as initially announced. But they still expressed concern over long-term exposure. Note that it's tough to avoid black plastics. Even if you throw out all your plastic kitchenware and dinnerware, you can't control the frozen food and takeout industry. Virtually all frozen dinners come in a black plastic tray. And takeout, e.g. sushi, is frequently in black plastic. To minimize risk, you can microwave the frozen food in another container. And remove the takeout once you get home.

As for plastics in other colors, the risk is unknown. The researchers only looked at black plastic because that's the most prevalent in kitchenware and frozen food containers. And it's known to be recycled from flame retarded equipment.

Whether you want to replace your kitchenware depends on the amount of risk you're willing to take. Many experts think that the risk is overblown. Others urge caution. The news came at a good time for me because I was going to replace my kitchen utensils anyway. Many were melted or deformed. Silicone was ideal because it's highly heat resistant, non-stick and mostly inert. And luckily, I found a similar set to this one for $2.99.

PS - Don't throw out the black plastic utensils! They make great tools for gardening, stirring paint, applying adhesives/spackle, etc.

No, it's not "fake." The amount of fire retardant leeched was indeed less than what was initially reported. However, the researchers stood by their conclusions that it's still a concern for long-term exposure, given how prevalent black plastic is around food. For example, virtually all frozen meals come in a black plastic tray. This plastic is then often exposed to heat and acidic foods.
