I heard of this from my grandmother, 30 years ago. I had no idea it still existed.

Is it any more appetizing than cream of wheat?

I like it sometimes. I usually eat oatmeal but it's nice to have a change of pace occasionally. But if you don't like cream of wheat you probably won't like this either, as it's basically the same thing.

I was like, 30 years ago.... damn, that's a long time ago, then I realized it's 1995, and I'm almost 50, and my mom made malt-o-meal muffins, and i loved them. https://www.food.com/recipe/magic-muffins-64632

Yeah, I'm 50 myself. My parents had cream of wheat, and she visited them my senior year, so... 33 years, I guess. She complained that she preferred this, and I don't think stores carry it where I grew up.

To be honest, while the idea of a quick option hot cereal is appealing, I really don't like cream of wheat or instant oatmeal. Hot grape nuts occasionally, but like once a year and I'm good. Mostly, I do steel cut oats and make fresh caramel or spiced apple to flavor it.

Damn.. hot cereals do sound good to me now as I get to the second half of my youthful existence. Steel cut oats sounds good Smilie

Born in '89. Can't believe I'm almost 40 myself lol. I remember my brother really talking up Cream of Wheat (Uncle Ben's, if that's even around anymore) and really not "tasting" the hype.

Speaking of 1995, that's probably around the time I first tried it!

farina is basically milled wheat but not to the extent that it becomes fine flour. a coarse mill, more like cornmeal consistency. i use farina with an egg and lawry's season salt to make dumplings in chicken soup. well, not anymore since eggs cost more than aged prime rib.

We Were Pretty Poor,

NEVER(!!!) got any of the "good cereals" that everyone else got. We BEGGED for the chocolate version when we saw it in the store one day. HORRIBLE!!! But guess what? Money was spent on it, so we were made to eat it...the ENTIRE box. LOL!!!

Ha! I'm remembering the same experience too now that you mentioned it. Tasted terrible but never, ever did we throw food away. Eastern European heritage here. Pick the chicken bones clean then boil them for soup.
