Yeah, it really needs to be automated to where it won't let you purchase if you're in one of the prohibited states. Years ago I bought a knife from Smith & Wesson, only to realize they don't ship to California, but they gladly took my money. I emailed them about a refund and they didn't even bother replying. Never got my money back
