I got one of these last April. I have taken it on a few trips and it has been a major improvement on our travel and using hotel internet. We have Unifi home network equipment and I set up my home gateway to act as a VPN endpoint and have this point to our network when on the hotel internet. Then all of our DNS queries and everything pass through our home Pi-Hole.

It's helpful for privacy, but we aren't doing anything major when traveling typically. What's really nice is the on-the-go ad blocking through Pi-Hole no matter where we are or what device is connected. And it's using the ad blocking lists I have curated over the years for our Pi-Hole, so it beats just trying to use a separate service/addon on each device we take with us.

They have definitely come a long way on the firmware stability and passing along captive portals.

Which one were you looking for? The other Gl.Inet routers seem to be on sale as well

They're clearing inventory because they're getting ready to release the Wi-Fi seven devices. I don't think the real world difference is going to be meaningful in terms of using your device as an intermediary to public Wi-Fi, but newer processors might make for better VPN usage or whatever other services you can run on these things.

Price is solid, I bought it last March for $78. The firmware was pretty buggy at that time, an experimental firmware resolved my problems. I have not upgraded from there since. I bought it to replace an old router running on a 5th gen i5 NUC to allow non-OpenVPN capable device to access a lab environment remotely when on the go. Overall, it does the job though not very satisfying.

For personal travel, I just use an old Android phone for Wifi-Sharing if available or Mobile Hotspot for mobile data. Then, have the end devices themselves connect to VPN.

For the features, the GL.iNet GL-AXT1800(Slate AX) might be a better value...

Can you explain why? I've done some research and it seems beryl ax is superior except for EAP

A quick SD search and the lowest price is around $65. Another 10% coupon then I'll bite.

Hello. I have two of the Beryl AX and one of the Flint 2. They are great routers with Openwrt as the OS. You will have many options to customize it to suit your needs. Highly recommend it if the majority of your end clients are using WIFI 6. Cheers!

Just bought this last week as it was the lowest price at that time, now it's lower. Can't price match though as I bought the combo with case. Frown

Price is great. Firmware is mature. New models are coming out soon but firmware is usually flaky until they get the bugs ironed out

Love it, bought years ago and it's already through multiple major software updates, especially the Captive Portal feature.

Great for travel with all of the family's devices and to only have to do a captive portal once every day or few days on one device rather than on every device.
I also use this hooked up to my Ubiquiti (Unifi) UDM-SE as a failover. If my main internet goes down, all I have to do is open Personal Hotspot on my iPhone, the Beryl connects to it within a minute, then feeds the UDM-SE. Saves having to reconnect a few streaming devices around the house for a few minutes to a few hours for the outage. Has been working great!
