How would that 5800XT compare to a 12th gen Intel i5, for a non-gaming productivity desktop? I just need it to multitask Office apps, occasional media streaming (music more than movies), and a ton of open tabs (40-80) in Brave browser. With no gaming or overclocking, would I be ok with a 450 watt antec power supply and standard case fans, or would the Ryzen also require an additional CPU cooler?

As much as I love Ryzen, I don't think you will see much difference. Save your money, I am assuming you currently own the Intel system. If not then yes, the Ryzen will be marginally better. 450w is fine. It comes with the Wraith Prism cooler which will be fine in your application.

I highly doubt. With AMD 7000 cpu/mb prices are dropping, AM4 price can't go up.
With the additional tariffs being applied to chinese goods, prices can and most likely will go up at least in the short term. At least until more US companies start finding alternate areas of the world to move their production.

No, I own a 4th gen i5 which I was thinking about upgrading to the 12gen Intel. There's nothing wrong with my current setup, but it's not Win11 compatible so that's the main reason I'm upgrading...hopefully prices will drop not increase as evil Microsoft's October deadline approaches.
But with all these new tariffs on the way, I'm afraid of the latter scenario...

I need to upgrade my mobo (and at this point, tbh the whole system) as i'm loooong overdue with my MSI z170A 😅 this a good route to go to start a new build? i don't pc game nearly as much as I used to.... unless we count the 1k hours on BG3 ... still I want something somewhat future-friendly, I do normally upgrade at least SOMETHING every couple years

no, I don't think so. We will see. if AM5 costs the same as AM4, demand for AM4 will drop a lot.
