what applications do you think would require the added ram? i can't foresee using it to do much more than serve/store files to other devices from the connected external HDs. I know a clean win 10 installation boots using only about 3GB of memory, and if I needed to serve media plex doesn't require much more on top of that?

Depends on your synology model. Quicksync hw accelerated transcode is available for plex pass and Intel cpu: https://support.plex.tv/articles/...streaming/

I think you're right. DDR5 usually commands a premium. You should post a new hot deal for it.

Spot on with this. In lower end systems the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 becomes more noticeable. Especially considering the N150/100 is limited to single channel

That one might be more powerful, but I personally hate it when they put wired ports at right angles to each other on the chassis. Makes things so cluttered looking.

I plan to buy the DDR5 one you link to, for $150 after $50 coupon. I think the USB-C connector is just for charging. The only downside I see is the the RAM appears to be soldered, so not upgradable, but 12G should be fine for a WMC client machine.

I like the idea of turning one of these into a 24/7 Plex server but I feel like the juice is worth more than the squeeze. My gaming PC works just fine and has the extra horsepower needed to transcode (which is rarely ever these days).
Only minor thing is it has to be turned on and probably uses way too much power for streaming, but still doesn't seem worth it.

N97 the better processor/graphics than N150, but I recall someone saying there was a tradeoff with the GMKtec N97 NUC in the other thread...I think that the SSD interface is SATA instead of NVMe?
