If you're on a tight budget yes. But if you can spare an additional $90 then I'd get the 7700X bundle. Comes with 32GB of DDR5 and the AM5 platform is more future proof and has an upgrade path since AMD is expected to release Zen 6 on it.

would be a major upgrade for you. 12th gen is where they put out a new processor architecture, then broke it in 13th and 14th gen.

Roughly 3x the performance of your 8700.

All that said. This isnt the best of microcenter bundled in my opinion.

Nobody and I mean nobody ever really upgrades their CPU on same platform like 1%. They run the platform and setup they have until they get tired of it and upgrade to the whatever platform appeals at the time. People need to get off the dead socket bandwagon. The only time it's a dead socket is if Windows says so and then you might have an argument.

Install msi afterburner/riva statistics and turn on onscreen display to see cpu/gpu load while you are playing your game. If one of them is constantly 100%, that is the piece you want to upgrade.

This is a good deal. It's on par with an AMD 5700/5800 a couple gens old. But really you are getting a mobo and ram for the price of a CPU. I jumped to AMD after the 4770k back when intel was to king of CPUs. But I'd get this for this price. Plus this chip doesn't have the issues the new intel chips have. If intel ever got 3D cache they might get back into the game. Back in the piledriver days of AMD no one thought they would bounce back to their K6 days when they were beating intel.

I got this combo but with a higher-tier Gigabyte motherboard more than a year ago from Micro Center for $350. A month ago, I bought 32GB (2x16GB) G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200, planning to replace the 16GB of memory or perhaps even run all four sticks together. I've been running successfully with 48GB since then. I am running at 3200 (XMP profile) and even though the ranks are different (original RAM is 1R and new RAM was 2R) and the actual chip manufacturers are different, it works great. The primary memory timings are the same and all but one or two of the extended timings are the same.

My previous build was an Ivy Bridge combo from Micro Center that I upgraded from an i3 to an i5 to an i7-equivalent Xeon, from HDD to SSD, and from HD 7850 to RX 470 over the course of its life. It was a Gigabyte motherboard and with a Z86 chipset. Over the years tinkering with the motherboard, I really came to appreciate the higher end Z86 over something like a lower-end H61 chipset. This motherboard has the higher-end Z790 chipset, of course.

If I were buying today, I would get a DDR5 based motherboard, but this is a good system. This motherboard will run Coreboot if you're paranoid. Smilie

I use a desktop PC for so long that by the next time I upgrade I have to replace the MB, CPU, and RAM.

The 2nd to last time I upgraded I went from a core i3 2nd gen to core i5 8th gen. After that went to core i5 13th gen.

That's been my argument in this thread. I guess my wording was off. This is a good deal, but it's already dated with ddr4.

DDR4 is indeed a deal-breaker. When I bought my still-current PC in Dec 2023 it had 32GB DDR5. I'm sure the next time I buy a PC it will probably have DDR6 (or 7).

Not to mention the latest USB version, nvme version, more throughput from the gpu, newer wifi/ Bluetooth version etc..etc.. it's just not worth futureproofing anymore.

this isnt accurate. when amd released the 5700x3d. people were upgrading and its all the same am4 socket..
