I bought the TP-Link Tri-Band BE19000 WiFi 7 Router (Archer BE800) and it was nothing but issues. Signal strength was poor even when the device was in question was one room over. Anything past that often got disconnected. The reviews said it was a problem, but I figured it was people who didn't know how to set it up. It was a waste of $500. Only reason why I upgraded was because I was now getting 2Gbps down and 400Gbps Up and wanted to get utilize it Wifi 6E.

Tried almost everything before giving up and cutting my losses. This was less than a month ago, firmware could have fixed the problem but I wasn't going to wait. Went back the Netgear Nighthawk and haven't had an issue since. Funny thing I had nighthawk wifi 6 router before and thought they are too expensive and others could do the same thing. It was a pricey mistake on my end. Look at the negative reviews because its mentioning the same problems I went through. My place is less than 1000 sq ft.
This and other routers from TP-Link are on sale. I want it but I am weary about the ban
I remember all those great Huawei "MateBook" laptop deals right before Huawei was banned. How great do you think firmware support will be on TP Link routers if the US govt bans them (ie, places TP Link on the US Entity List)?

Because the ban is mostly hyperbole.

The reality is none of these devices are any less secure than other consumer grade hardware, but they're easier to target politically because of xenophobia.
In everything I have read, I don't feel that xenophobia or politics has anything to do with it.

They aren't going to force them to do anything of the such. Stop with the fear mongering.

TP-Link hardly puts out updates as it is, so they're not about to put out an update that would render their products useless in other regions if used maliciously.
Don't be a fool. The Chinese govt can subsume any "private" Chinese company they want during wartime. You're making the same argument that Panama was making up until 5 minutes ago about the private Chinese Belt & Road companies controlling ports at both ends of the Panama Canal. They probably would not do anything of the sort, but would and could are different words.

Shout out to the guy I bought my house from who installed his FIOS modem in the far corner basement of a brick house forcing me to rely on annoying mesh systems

Have you tried MoCA or piwerline adapters?

Tplink routers stop getting new firmware after a few months. You just need to keep buying their "cheap" routers like a subscription.

Which routers would you suggest? Netgear has a history of failing early. Asus wifi 7 routers tend to be poorly review and expensive. 200 dollars for this router to kick it down the road might be a bargain. Basically a bad time to buy a router unless it is required. The market in general is pretty bad. I do consider it risky, but if you are willing to replace early then it might save money if one times it right.

6e routers which are reliable tend to be higher priced than this router. ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro is what 279.00
I replaced my TP Link with Nighthawk WiFi 7 Router RS600. The price is cheaper the range is the same but more reliable. My issue wasn't signal strength because I was able to get a strong signal all across my home but it would constantly drop. Its been 1 month with the RS600 and haven't had to touch it since the install. Touched the TPlink weekly to try to figure out why my devices were dropping. Before this I had the wifi6 version of the (RAXE500) which was also fine.

What exactly are you reading?

Because that's absolutely what it is.

Go do a search for RCEs on Netgear and tell me they don't deserve equal scrutiny that they simply aren't getting.

You're delusional.

First off, it wouldn't be China enforcing this.

Why would they care about hardening security to your network, especially if they supposedly are the reason for malicious exploits in the first place?

Secondly, you probably aren't following, but President Elon is dropping government employees like flies. They're going to have a hard time imposing a retail ban as it is. We're cooked when it comes to finding cooperation with any other nation.

Okay, if having an "incredibly weak hash" is the type of critical vulnerability that you classify as "better" than the proprietary competition, then by all means load up on free open source OpenWrt firmware.

At least open source has room for improvement at no mercy from one company or entity.

If you find an exploit, it doesn't exist for long.

You're naive to think being beholden to a company is somehow better.

I'm not naive at all. Some companies are better than others - ASUS is better than others. OpenWrt is better than relying on TP-Link proprietary firmware for damn sure, but that weak hash exploit I posted was out there for a long time before it was finally patched. Yes, the opensource coders patched it up once it was found... but how many OTHER people knew about that exploit prior to it being patched? You don't think the Chinese govt is looking for 0 day exploits on OpenWrt every damn day? I just think it's dumb to buy a TP-Link at this point in time - knowing what we know regarding their direct involvement in one of the biggest and worst hacks in American history - the Salt-Typhoon hack. There's a reason why the CCP targeted TP-Link routers. You're foolish if you believe otherwise.

Thank you for the suggestion. Netgear was a frequent choice for my early wired routers and I loved them. Mostly Asus after Wireless. Recent Asus just seem problematic on multiple levels. I will give Netgear a look. Thank you.

You rarely have a choice where they put the ONT terminals.

On my install, the geniuses mounted it too close to the breaker box and blocked the door from opening.

You can extend the fiber fairly easily if it's a standard SFP+ install. The extension cables are about $12 on Amazon for 30FT. Or just run ethernet and keep the modem where it is.
The last three ISP techs I've dealt with asked me where I wanted it installed and ran some cable if needed for router placed elsewhere. This seemed pretty standard for a new indoor hardware installation
I would think most people have no preference and or no idea about optimal placement so they trust the technician who may not know or care much about placement depending on if they're overscheduled in their shift.

think what devices you let ON your network.
now
think what device you trust to RUN your network.
TP is a Chineese company, ALL your network traffic (LAN and internet) passes through the router-switch.
It is a question of the firmware (current or next) whether the router decides to copy YOUR TRAFFIC to a destination of their choice.
Read about "TP data offload to servers in China"
Only routers/switches from reputable US companies: Amz, Google, Netgear.
