How does this compare to Dual Bay Hard Drive Docking Stations? Those are around $25-35 on the low end. From what I see, the docking stations have offline cloning, lower TB limits, open air (vice enclosed w/ fan), and are cheaper.

Not trying to speak ill of this enclosure at all. I am working to build my first small home server, so I want information to decide whether to buy an enclosure like this one or a HDD docking station.

Speed, and has built in cooling.
I have a love hate relationship with cloning. I have had a couple docks where this is an option. Issue was it was a one button press to do the clone and it got hit a couple of times by accident.

any current decent WD disk deals to pair with this? All I've seen lately is seagate.

I purchased one of these for myself in December. It was dead out of the box. Would not reccommend. I usually like Orico, but not this one.

I suggest something with RAID functionality but those run $60-$80. It helps if you have lower capacity drives and you can run them in RAID 0 for larger capacity and speed or use RAID 1 for redundancy.

I like the design of this DAS. Just wish it had RAID. Probably cheaper to setup a janky setup with cheaper single disk USB encosures and a $5 USB fan. Not like you are showcasing it.

I bought this. Received a box that had been opened. Although it kind of worked it would lose connection. If you go to amazon reviews there are a lot of these stories that amazon covers up with the. "Message from Amazon: This item was fulfilled by Amazon, and we take responsibility for this fulfillment experience."
Selling broken items as new is lame.

I got this and tested it with 2 empty hard drives. Formatted them and tried to do a data read/write speed test. It kept disconnecting so it's going back.

This is a good price, considering the same enclosure is on "sale" at Newegg for $70.

But... Reviews across all sites are sketchy. Lots of complaints about long startup time, inconsistent connection, completely dying after a few hours time.

I probably wouldn't trust this for long term 24x7 use with your home server. It's probably decent for occasional use or temporarily dropping in drives for maintenance.

(Also don't worry about hardware RAID on a consumer drive enclosure. You gain very little over simple software RAID arrays, which are easy to setup even on Windows.)
