this is not the same Pioneer as the one from 20 years ago. the original one made marvelous stuff.

the Pioneer TV of today is made by TCL... the Chinese company that bought the name

This seems like a decent option for a large 4k monitor if you're good with 4k at 60Hz. I'd bet it doesn't properly display chroma 4:4:4, but at this price I think that's probably expected. It did look like in a couple of the reviews that there was some light bleed and panel uniformity issues that people didn't note, but it's possible they were overlooking it given the price point. Sidebar - it looks like Best Buy incentivizes their consumers to leave reviews, which I think has to lead to a favorable slant, so I find that strange. I'm sure BB doesn't suggest to the consumer to favorably review the product, but I think that will just happen naturally when someone feels like they're being compensated for the time they spent reviewing something.

Still, that minor observation aside, I think if you know what you're getting into and just wanted to use the TV like a "dumb" TV (because I don't think I'd personally set up a Xumo account) for a desktop setup with a console or PC I think the value here is probably incredible. I'd definitely power it on right away to see if you need to play the panel lottery in regards to backlight bleed and panel uniformity.

There was a decent review of this model on YouTube that is probably worth your time to watch before buying, but the reviewer seemed to believe that the TV was a good value even at $200, so at $120 it seems like a no brainer.

Not sure how much of a "deal" this is. It's a crappy TV being sold for a low price. I guess if you just want something cheap for the garage, then maybe...

I bought a open 55" box from BB for $180. Pretty good display for the price. The 55" is only available at BB..exclusive. Only thing is that you can't install extra apps or sideload anything. You can use a Firestick if you need things that badly. Its not my main TV, so i'm fine with the purchase.

These things are a piece of shit. The blacks are not good. Takes awhile to switch to anything external. Go with Toshiba if you need something cheap. These things are Chinese not real pioneer.

yeah, good point to clarify. I had read before we purchased they weren't manufacturing anymore. I guess I was just nostalgic with the name but had heard of TCL so wasn't really concerned, esp since we just needed something lower cost.
same way that GE light bulbs that's sold everywhere(Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon, etc) are not actually made by the same GE that manufactures nuclear reactors or 777 jet engines. Frown maybe it's just me, but I really dislike when famous brand names gets sold for the sole reason of name recognition, even when the product is made by someone else.

Pioneer and Toshiba are just brands these days. Hisense is the manufacturer.

Been using a TCL 43" 4k as my main monitor for 3 years, could not been happier. A 32" 4k monitor has text too small at full resolution. 43" is just right. Also, it has a nice speaker.

The 50" and 55" versions are also on sale and under 200$. I actually had a 43" LG set go dim and needed a replacement for just a small den area. I went for the 50" Pioneer because it was 159$ at the time. I've been very happy with the set. It was very light and the picture is "good enough".

The XUMO interface, like others have said, is total garbage. It's super slow and really limited. You need to have a Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or something else hooked up and the set will be fine. Even the remote is not that responsive, so switch to controlling with the other smart device's remote to avoid wanting to throw the remote. There is a setting to remember the last input, but it's turned off by default. You'll want to enable that when setting the TV up.

Bought one - as a backup for my 43" TCL 4k. Free shipping to home.

Bought a Pioneer 50" for $200 1.5 year ago - OK so far. Been using as main TV - but we did not use it much. Does not differ much from a TCL.

Agreed this happens in the electronics industry ALOT. Chinese companies buy up well regarded brands and then tank the quality and just use the name to push the merch.

Pick this up, updated the firmware, and tested for Chroma 4:4:4 ... it looks like it's supported, but only on HDMI 2 and 3. HDMI 1 for some reason doesn't. I used the rtings test pattern from here: https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/c...ubsampling and the red and blue text look fine.
Using the MADShi ChromaRes.png from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gam...?rdt=60779 yields a little different result, 444 is displayed distinctly, but you can also make out the 422 in the picture as well.
The text isn't the clearest, but at least chroma 444 is supported.

since Pioneer is just a name owned made by TCL, shouldn't they be the same? Big Grin

I have a Xumo TV and it's the worst. They removed the remote control app in Christmas 2024, so if you lose the remote you have to buy a new one or you can't use the TV. The ecosystem is horrible.
This never bothers me as there are frequent deals on last year's model of Roku Express, Onn Google TV devices, or the Amazon Fire stick. Just need to make sure the ones on sale support full 4K if you are paying for streaming services that provide 4K content. If you know exactly which model you want down to the model number there are superb prices over on eBay or similar for used devices if you can invest the time to check the pictures and check the seller's feedback history to make sure they are legit. Also Amazon deals sometimes for what used to be Amazon Warehouse but I think is now named something else.

I'm glad you mentioned this. Makes me wonder if the TCL branded remotes would pair to this Pioneer. Gobs of used TCL remotes over on eBay. Would make sense to grab a spare one just in case and pair it up ahead of time if TV supports pairing to more than one remote.
