this is not the same Pioneer as the one from 20 years ago. the original one made marvelous stuff.

the Pioneer TV of today is made by TCL... the Chinese company that bought the name

This seems like a decent option for a large 4k monitor if you're good with 4k at 60Hz. I'd bet it doesn't properly display chroma 4:4:4, but at this price I think that's probably expected. It did look like in a couple of the reviews that there was some light bleed and panel uniformity issues that people didn't note, but it's possible they were overlooking it given the price point. Sidebar - it looks like Best Buy incentivizes their consumers to leave reviews, which I think has to lead to a favorable slant, so I find that strange. I'm sure BB doesn't suggest to the consumer to favorably review the product, but I think that will just happen naturally when someone feels like they're being compensated for the time they spent reviewing something.

Still, that minor observation aside, I think if you know what you're getting into and just wanted to use the TV like a "dumb" TV (because I don't think I'd personally set up a Xumo account) for a desktop setup with a console or PC I think the value here is probably incredible. I'd definitely power it on right away to see if you need to play the panel lottery in regards to backlight bleed and panel uniformity.

There was a decent review of this model on YouTube that is probably worth your time to watch before buying, but the reviewer seemed to believe that the TV was a good value even at $200, so at $120 it seems like a no brainer.

Not necessarily - Walmart has Mainstay and Better Home and Garden... Also, tools peope will point out that so many different brands are from same company.

Anyway, in this case, the Pioneer is much like a TCL.But honestly, the company should have more biz sense and differentiate the two brands.

since Pioneer is just a name owned made by TCL, shouldn't they be the same? Big Grin

This never bothers me as there are frequent deals on last year's model of Roku Express, Onn Google TV devices, or the Amazon Fire stick. Just need to make sure the ones on sale support full 4K if you are paying for streaming services that provide 4K content. If you know exactly which model you want down to the model number there are superb prices over on eBay or similar for used devices if you can invest the time to check the pictures and check the seller's feedback history to make sure they are legit. Also Amazon deals sometimes for what used to be Amazon Warehouse but I think is now named something else.

I'm glad you mentioned this. Makes me wonder if the TCL branded remotes would pair to this Pioneer. Gobs of used TCL remotes over on eBay. Would make sense to grab a spare one just in case and pair it up ahead of time if TV supports pairing to more than one remote.
But once you start adding in the Need for a Roku/Fire Stick, you are adding to the price. Maybe not much, it may bring the total cost close to better quality TVs.

Perhaps ....

$30 more...but if you are spending $20 on some type of stick....why not just go for a little better TV overall. Mind you Insignia is not a a Sony....but at least it's not a XMUO based TV.

Pick this up, updated the firmware, and tested for Chroma 4:4:4 ... it looks like it's supported, but only on HDMI 2 and 3. HDMI 1 for some reason doesn't. I used the rtings test pattern from here: https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/c...ubsampling and the red and blue text look fine.
Using the MADShi ChromaRes.png from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gam...?rdt=60779 yields a little different result, 444 is displayed distinctly, but you can also make out the 422 in the picture as well.
The text isn't the clearest, but at least chroma 444 is supported.
Perfect, gonna pick one up then. $120 for a 4K 4:4:4 43" monitor is unbeatable.

Yeah You're right. Not worth the hassle to purchase a streaming box to replace the XUMO stuff. Your recommended TV for the additional $30 is a much better pick! Like someone else said this deal would be best suited for over the air TV, use as a big super affordable computer monitor, a cheap gaming TV for the kids who are unlikely to care about picture quality and will be focused on the time spent playing the games instead of doing schoolwork, or someone who is OK with the XUMO experience and signing up for free with XUMO. Appreciate the reality check.

Still curious if the TCL or similar looking remotes would pair to this Pioneer TV set. My understanding is that these remotes are often pairing in a very similar fashion to bluetooth device pairing.

Wow I remember when pioneer was leading the way when it came to TVs back when Plasmas were coming out. Just like Zenith, RCA, and Philips. Brands got sucked up by low end Chinese companies. Now those brands are basically dead.

We have always bought the ~$300 Samsung TV's for the kids bedrooms and whatnot, but this past fall I came across the Pioneer 55" at Best buy. Having had the Pioneer plasma, I went off brand recognition and got the Pioneer for my son's college apartment. We bought it last fall and just this week, its all messed up, all these lines like when you see someone throw's a Wii controller into the screen. He said it worked the night before and now all messed up the next day.

Currently have a support case into Pioneer so we'll see how that goes. I'm wondering if we should have just stuck with the Samsungs, as the 3 we've purchased are all over 5 years old and going strong.
Whenever I buy electronics or major appliances I always buy the longest extended warranty available. It has been a real help at times.

I bought for use as PC monitor based on specs that stated it supports 4:4:4 @ 60. Turns out it actually is not 4K - why? Because text looks zagged at 4K but Crystal clear at 1080p. Tells me they are lying about this being 3840x2160 pixel … its most probably 1920x1080 panel but supports 4k input. Avoid

That's unfortunate 4K didn't work out for you as there are a number of reviews where owners are happy with this set as a 4K monitor [bestbuy.com]. Might there be any HDMI modes/settings that allow you to change things, such switch between different chroma settings?

I am very familiar with what it takes to make a TV do chroma correctly. This TV does do chroma finef when using Game Mode. That's not the issue. I am talking about readability of text … eg in a word document - it was fuzzy. Crazy! When peering at it up close, I can tell that there is not enough pixels available to make the text smooth. Now using a 8 yr old Sony XBR with IPS panel I bought on FBM for $80 - crystal clear text.

I think the smart features of any cheap TV are bad even if the OS is better for one vs the other. I also suspect using apps and downloading apps and updates causes the cheap on board storage to fail. Ultimately, using a separate device for smart features is likely better for most people. The Onn 4k box is only $20. I'd use that even if the TV came with Google TV vs this Xumo nonsense.

I can't imagine how an extra $20 gets you closer to a more premium TV. Everything in the $300 and below range is mediocre. A $140 TV is not going to be better than a $120 TV. Also, Insignia is an in house Best Buy brand. Hardly any improvement over a "Pioneer"/Hisense/TCL TV. I wouldn't be surprised if Hisense or TCL produces Insignia TVs.

This is one of the Best Buy reviews (5 stars) using it as a PC monitor=

"It works great as a 4k PC monitor. This is what I learned during the set up.
- It has HDMI 2 ports. It can display 4K at 60Hz if you connect it to a source capable of that with an HDMI 2 cable or higher.
4k at 30 Hz is not enough when I use it as a PC monitor. Mouse pointer movement is choppy, and the clicks are inaccurate at 30 Hz. Please make sure you are getting 60Hz to get a good experience.
- I am using it with an HP PC with integrated Intel UHD Graphics and HDMI 1.4b/HDCP 2.2 port. I can get 4k @ 60Hz using HDMI 2.0 cable.
- Set the PC HDMI input to Game mode. PC mode is not available in the settings.
- You can set the Default input. When you turn the TV on, it will switch to that input after the home screen is displayed for a couple of seconds. Settings > Antenna and inputs > Default input > choose the HDMI port your PC uses.
- HDMI-CEC does not work with my PC. it does not turn on or off with my PC power and HDMI signal.
- If you are going to turn off the monitor by physical switch (on the left lower corner) than using the TV remote, turn off the TV before the PC. If you turn of the PC first, the TV gets confused for a few seconds from loss of input signal."
