People have been using $5 Visible lines ($25 - $20 referral code for first month).
EDIT: I guess Metro doesn't have much of a time limit between when letting your account expire and placing new orders because I just placed an order for this ip13 and it's only been about 3-4 months since I let my previous metro plan expire. Also, I placed the order just minutes after creating a visible account and porting that new visible number over to metro.

So even if you only pay for one month of service you can let the phone sit in a drawer for the remaining 11 months without any service and it will be automatically unlocked on the 12th month?

Mint & USMobile (Light Plan) are good alternatives. I've been using USMobile for only pay $10/month for 2GB. But if you're smart, you can bounce back and forth between Mint & USMobile and take advantage of new customer promos.
Its IMEI number the account number?
