You can go thru Costco or Sams club if youre a member. Saves you the $35 fee and you can earn up to a $100 gift card for upgrading.

Seems like Simple Choice does qualify and gets you up to $500 trade in value.
Unfortunately t mobile charges $30 extra on phones (apple sells ip16 for 800 and t mobile for 830.
T mobile also asked for $35 connection charge.
This extra $65 surcharge makes it less appealing ☹️

If going through Sams Club, can you use sams club to pay for the phone/tax etc?

They have to order them for you for delivery. Nothing is stocked in store. That is the change from when it was a Costco/Sams club store to now a t-mobile store in a store (as they call it). For the trade in, you can mail it in, or drop it off at a t-mobile corporate store.
Do you need the EMEI at time or order? I want to pickup a used S10 but dont want to wait till received

So why don't they replace the credit with a discount? Would be more efficient & cost effective for customers without requiring any additional subsidies on the T Mobile side.

The tax liability with the current transaction structure makes it less attractive. A few hours of time from a tax attorney could work wonders here.
The credit is designed to be 24 months for a reason... They want to keep you as an active long-term T-Mobile user.

If they give you the discount up-front, then you could just leave...

Also, you're still not understanding how this works from a reporting perspective.

Apple is not handing the discounts out. They're selling these phones for full price. T-Mobile is the one giving credits back monthly for 24 months but the taxes STILL have to be paid when Apple sells the phones to any state that has a sales tax. Why would T-Mobile pay for this? Give me one good reason?

The tax liability for you is like $50 extra... If that's troubling for you, perhaps a new phone should be the least of your concerns. T-Mobile is doing just fine. Worth over $300 billion.

Well said.

If people want to complain about taxes go complain to your government officials.

I have TMO Essentials plan with 4 lines (one is free). Pay around $120/month or so, i think?

I would like to get decently priced phone upgrades (trade-ins are fine) every so often without having to keep up with various deals. Thoughts on whether its worth it to upgrade to Magenta Max?

Not worth it because your monthly bill will go up considerably , I have stayed on the T-Mobile one plan for around 10 years and just buy the phones at Apple and tirade old ones, my bill for 11 lines is around $230 a month

But, but, but.....I'll get a discount on a phone.

If only people could do simple math.

It is almost always cheaper to just buy the phone used than to upgrade your plan so you can get a 'free' phone which isn't in reality free because you're paying a significantly higher cost per month to have that ability.

The higher cost per month would cost more than the phone itself if you were to just buy it yourself.

What do you mean "use Sam's Club to pay for the phone/tax"? They handed me the tablet and had me put in my CC number. If you have a CC from Sam's you can use that but I presume they only take major credit cards.

For the record, I went to the Sam's T-Mobile promo page today and was able to apply for the 3 gift cards for the 3 phones I went to the kiosk to buy. I was also able to remove Protection 360 from the lines they covertly signed me up for. I got a text telling me as well that it was added to my account and another one after I removed it. Such a shady thing to do.

I do with we had the option to have the instant trade in credit be applied over xx of months instead of all at once. Might not be a big deal on one line, but with 4, the instant is about $900 for us. Would have rather had that split out like the promotional credit will be.
