Got this before, 5GHz stopped working after a few months.
This is a hugely popular model and wonder if you just got a lemon.
Just do an RMA.

Have a gt-ax6000 and it's fantastic. 2 years and not a quirk.

Asus can be inconsistent. Prior to gt6000, I was about to give up on Asus routers but decided one last try considering the excellent reviews from trusted sources.

If the 86u is anything like it (it is) you won't need mesh unless a giant property.

I have mine in a 2500 sq ft home with 3 floors and get great reception everywhere, even landscaping lights 100 ft away (ofc Iot utilize 2.4)
Also available at best buy with 15% trade-in offer making it $144.50.

I have GT-AC2900 which worked fine for a bit before the 2.4GHz band which would just randomly stop working after a while... and it's been happening more and more often, and I feel like it's going to be unusable soon. I've had to have the app have it re-set every week, then then every few days, and then every day.

I was looking at this router as a replacement but I guess I'll have to keep looking.

I've had this router for years, zero issues. Range could be a little longer to cover more outside of the house, but I have full coverage inside. In fact, it's so good that I've moved my gaming PC to a different room and just use WiFi instead of Ethernet. I don't play twitchy multiplayer games, but everything else works as well as can be expected.

RT-AC3100: End of Life product.
If you worry about the security for firmware? YES.
If you think about the performance and other things? It's up to you.

Performance.
AC86U Pro is better than AX88U Pro.

Not all Asus routers are great, but this one could be the next RT-AC68U. My last 68u lasted more than 6 years. During those years, I had zero issue with the router. The reason I replaced it with this router is because when too many devices like smart plugs are connecting to the router it becomes unstable and I want faster wireless connections. I had this router for about 2 years now, only rebooted once. I live in a 4 stores house including a basement, the router is placed in the first floor, I have 5G band coverage all over the house. The 2.4 G band covers even more, I can have usable connection up to 50 yards from my house.

I have never had any problem with Asus routers starting with the TMO AC1900. Currently running Asus RT-AX88U (AX6000) bought used for $80 on OfferUp. TP-Link routers are also great but the Trend Micro security is only available via subscription on some models. Trend Micro security is always free on Asus routers.

I had the 86U and it burnt out. I didn't want to get another 86U or Pro, I went with the 88U Pro. Don't know if the vertical footprint of the 86U contributed to the burnt out. When I say burnt out, I meant, I smelled it internally and it was no longer working, hardwired and wifi.

So time will tell if any issues come up for the 88U Pro. So far so good, have the 88U Pro for about half year. Just my own experience with 86U. Prior to failing, it worked without any issues.

I own this model and I absolutely can not recommend it. I have to reset it constantly and if you have big downloads it will over heat and shut off. Buyer be ware.
