They're partially correct, there's an easy fix. They're using a USB C to C cable on this, which causes that issue. With a USB A to C cable it doesn't have the issue. Sounds weird, but plenty of cheap devices aren't fully compatible with C to C cables. Still better than micro USB....

I have the Restnature version of this and it's been awesome for sleeping at hotels. Tiny size and the sound is loud so I don't even run it at full volume. I wish they'd sprung for a little bigger battery though, I can't get over 7 hours on the battery. If I could get 9, then I could just not leave it plugged in at night.
This is a cool little gadget. It's about the size of a k-cup!

It's interesting what a reviewer said about charging the device while using it:
"When the USB cord is connected the machine will not allow you to turn on device. But if you turn it on and then plug it in it seems to work.- It can't be used while plugged in. You have to charge it and use it unplugged. (Although I did see another reviewer claim they found a work around for this)."

I'm unsure how that works, but I'd definitely expect to be able to use it while plugged in. If this reviewer's assessment is accurate, you'd have to unplug it, turn it on, then plug it in again. This may be cumbersome if used dailly (or nightly).
yeah, but then you need to leave your phone running all night.

also this is commonly used in children's rooms. if you use your phone, then your phone is tied up in the kids room all night long

Thanks, in for one!

(I always pack a larger sound machine because I keep forgetting to buy a smaller one. No more forgetting!)

Lots of free alternatives - YouTube on a smart TV, for example has every sound you can imagine.

I struggled with earplugs for years, but a white noise machine (not this one) was a "why didn't I think of this sooner" moment. Hope it works for you Smilie
Hope so.. got it today and testing the sound.. a lot of features for the price. I like the variety of tones, even a lullaby for kids. I like the babbling brook sound but afraid it might make me pee all night. Simple to set up and volume is plenty loud if needed. It might come in handy for those late army base firing range nearby. At all hours, rattles my house!

Got the BOGO today for gifting friends.

I purchased one of these last year for travel and the sound quality is low compared to a full size. I didn't like using the phone/tablet, but it turns out a phone was easier than remembering to bring this along and keep it separately charged.

I find items like this fascinating. We all carry cellphones with us all the time. Your cellphone already does everything this gadget does. There is literally no use for an item like this. Even in this thread, no one has mentioned a single reason to use this over a cellphone, which you already have with you.
I use something like this over a cellphone for one simple reason.

It's easier.

I don't want to go through unlocking my phone, opening the app, starting it, setting the volume, plugging in the phone, and setting it on the nightstand. With my device, it's always where it needs to be, at the right volume, and I just press one button to start or stop. Also my phone doesn't have speakers on the back

I also have a kitchen timer on my phone, but it's easier to just use the physical one in the kitchen.

We all already have sounds machines in our pockets. Plenty of sleep sound tracks available to play on a endless loop on your phones.

This looks great for travel. I have a Marpac Dohm sound machine which uses a physical motor to power a rotating piece which produces the white noise. It's probably 10 times the size of this thing and it's a bit cumbersome to pack in a suite case.

If it's only good for 7-8 hours I would have suggested they make it ever so slightly larger to hold a bigger battery so that it works just a tad longer. However, if you're able to simply plug it in and it runs indefinitely, it's a moot point.

Great deal!
Whoa that physical machine sounds cool. I always use a fan so I guess that's a similar concept.

I've come to find that Alexa eventually starts changing its responses to requests for ambient noise, brown noise, white noise, rain, etc. by suggesting different skills and asking you to add a subscription

it's really annoying. sometimes it will play a new playlist with totally unrelated sounds or music as well.

I've had to change my verbal requests at least 10 times in the past 3 months because of this
I used to have my Home play ambient music while I slept which was great (thanks Brian Eno) until one day I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of zombies trying to eat my brains. Google's algorithm decided that "Halloween ambience" counted as ambient music. What a weird night that was.

Could one just use an app on your phone?
Yes, I have White Noise on my phone and it's free and really good. You can even mix your own sounds. Still sometimes use a stand alone as they sound a little fuller/more natural due to the tiny phone speaker
