I highly recommend "10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki" to see the master behind this legacy, before watching this.
Just watch and enjoy the weirdness and art, treat it like a well funded film fest movie. I'm not criticizing people's dislike of it or claims of convoluted plot points but it makes way more sense then classic anime movies of the 80s/90s. I feel like I need to rewatch it to understand the hate, because it didnt seem much different in confusing or complexity as some of his past works like Howls. The world always comes second place to characters. This one mudies that part up a bit.
The animation and detail is superb.

I can't imagine watching this one again, because while knowing the context and backstory makes the message of the film more clear, it doesn't make it enjoyable.

It was like Miyazaki had no one telling him to clean things up or explain something just a bit more.
Add in the fact they throw in a whole new character and this weird bird army stuff nearly 75% into the movie and it just was a cluster.
Trying not to spoil anything, but some of the "rules" of the other land seemed completely arbitrary: Stacking of the rocks, what you can't touch, what can't eat you, the great uncle interactions. I did get a kick out of the huge quantities of bird poop, though.
If you can stream it on Max, I'd do that before plunking down $6 on it, as some people truly hate this flick.
