I wouldn't go around telling people they'll probably like this if they like the previous movies. I love Studio Ghibli, but I hated this. Same goes for a couple of my friends. They're big fans of the studio. Each one thought this was beyond boring. I've heard a lot of other Studio Ghibli fans say the same thing.
Agreed. I've seen every Ghibli movie/short/collab, a couple of dozen times at this point. This is the only one I can't watch again, just because the plot is so bad. The animation was nice though.
Agreed. I say that as a fan of the studio. I truly believe some people are just doing mental gymnastics to convince themselves that they like it.

This would not be the first studio ghibli movie I would recommend to anyone. One must know Miayazaki's style, the stage in his career in 2024, his ever repeating final retirement project, his background, his upbringing, his beliefs and the Japanese culture. Only then will one understand and appreciate this movie. This movie is very alienating and hard to follow, Japanese and Miazayaki's metaphors up the wazoo. This is more of a college movie interpretation course than entertainment. But for the hardcore fans, this is a deep movie.
I highly recommend "10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki" to see the master behind this legacy, before watching this.

FWIW, I thought this was one of Miyazaki's best films.

This is the anime version of Tenet. It's quite pretty to look at but no matter how you think about it none of it really makes any sense.

Are people really disliking this because they don't get it? Or because of some other reason?

Just watch and enjoy the weirdness and art, treat it like a well funded film fest movie. I'm not criticizing people's dislike of it or claims of convoluted plot points but it makes way more sense then classic anime movies of the 80s/90s. I feel like I need to rewatch it to understand the hate, because it didnt seem much different in confusing or complexity as some of his past works like Howls. The world always comes second place to characters. This one mudies that part up a bit.

The animation and detail is superb.

I couldn't finish Tales of Earthsea once, so that's quite impressive. One should definitely watch this once on Max before buying though, it's not going to hit with everyone. It definitely felt long.

I love Studio Ghibli movies even the ones that are ok....just watched this last night with the family nobody liked it. It's long, nothing happens, and nothing is explained at all until the end. Watch for free on HBO Max I would never buy this.

As another poster mentioned, if you know the context of this movie and what was trying to be conveyed and to whom, the movie makes a lot more sense and is much more poignant. But, by and large, I don't want to have to read up the motivations and personal history of filmmaker to understand the significance. Maybe 30 ears ago when I was an insufferable and pretentious college kid, but not now.

I can't imagine watching this one again, because while knowing the context and backstory makes the message of the film more clear, it doesn't make it enjoyable.

Thanks for coming to the movie's defense. I enjoyed it quite a bit as I watched it with my son who has and understanding like yours and was able to help explain things for me.

Can't believe so many can't process that this is simply about a young boy processing loss and the oddly quick replacement of his mom. This is no spoiler. Pretext laid out in first 15 minutes. Alice in Wonderland style Sci-fi fantasy overlayed to cope and work through it all. I don't get what's not gotten... There are plenty other Ghibli movies with much worse pacing.

agree completely with the "love Ghibli, this was horrible" reviews. This was a slog and completely disjointed.
It was like Miyazaki had no one telling him to clean things up or explain something just a bit more.
Add in the fact they throw in a whole new character and this weird bird army stuff nearly 75% into the movie and it just was a cluster.

Not possible, unless you really want to make yourself cry for several hours.

I just watched this movie this weekend. I liked it, but it was a mixed bag - the animation was phenomenal, but I feel like I missed out on some things watching the dub.

Trying not to spoil anything, but some of the "rules" of the other land seemed completely arbitrary: Stacking of the rocks, what you can't touch, what can't eat you, the great uncle interactions. I did get a kick out of the huge quantities of bird poop, though.

If you can stream it on Max, I'd do that before plunking down $6 on it, as some people truly hate this flick.

Not sure my opinion matters here or not, but I'm not what you'd call an anime fan. I don't hate the genre, but I never got into it. However, I enjoyed The Boy and the Heron immensely. It's such a strange, odd, but enjoyable story. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I'd recommend it.
