The use case would be productivity, light to moderate gaming, and occasional media comsumption, with portability and battery consumption as secondary (but still meaningful) concerns. This model appears larger/heavier with a numeric keypad, larger and better resolution display, and slightly more powerful CPU, but the CPU also is an older line (not lunar lake, it has less and I think slower RAM (16gb), and has an older ARC integrated graphics GPU.
I generally favor better performance over display to some degree, but am wondering if the newer CPU and ARC and extra RAM in the S 14 will give it enough of a performance edge to justify the smaller and lower resolution display for the same price. If it is still going to not perform as well, then I can't see much of a reason to get it (beyond smaller and lighter size and battery life).

I connect my laptop to a 34" monitor and this is what my daily laptop usage looks like...
- Programs that are always open
- Outlook, Whatsapp, Discord, Internet Browser
- I work with large excel spreadsheets that range from 10mb-100mb in size with lots of data. I analyze and manipulate the data all day, and I need this program to always run smoothly.
- I trade/manage stocks. I use TradingView desktop app looking at up to 10 charts at a time with real-time data.
- My internet browser is always open with multiple tabs.
Ideally…- $1,099 max price
- 15.6" or 16" screen, >1080p resolution
- 1TB+ SSD
- Battery Life: I am almost always plugged in. If I can get 4 hours without being plugged in, that is good enough.
Where I Need Input…- CPU: Ultra 9, i9, or AMD Ryzen 9. I am not sure what would best suit my needs. I will likely use this new laptop for 3-5 years.
- RAM: I think I would be best suited with 32GB of RAM. It doesn't need to come with 32GB of RAM, but I must be able to get to that amount within my budget if I need to upgrade myself. I don't know if the laptop in this deal has soldered RAM or whether I can add more.
- GPU: I think I can probably be fine with integrated graphics, I don't plan on gaming. If anyone thinks I should have dedicated, let me know.
I have also been looking at the ASUS - Zenbook S 16 16" 3K OLED for $1,099. Not sure how this one compares.https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus...Id=65844

Tell me you know nothing about display technology without telling me you know nothing about display technology.

CPU: The ultra I9 and Ryzen AI 300 chips are mobile chips which will give you a better battery life. Ryzen chipsets are more efficient and will perform better than a comparable Intel chip. When you see Ryzen I9 or Intel I9 followed by an H at the end of the numbers, those are usually desktop chips dumbed down for laptop use. They will perform better than the previously mentioned laptop chips but drain battery faster, again Ryzen is more efficient and usually going to perform better than Intel. For the tasks you mentioned, the data manipulation will benefit using the more robust CPU's. The amount of cores for you is likely going to be irrelevant compared to single core processing, which Ryzen still wins in most cases these days.
TLDR: Pick the more robust processor over the mobile chips since you are always plugged in.
RAM: Most of the thin laptops you find will have soldered RAM which cannot be changed. The 32GB of Ram is nice when you open a bunch of applications and have graphs running in the background. Each version of the laptops you mentioned have a 32GB version which will charge you a premium.
TLDR: Go with 32GB, pay once cry once. This price increase will usually include a better CPU and/or GPU.
GPU: Integrated GPU's also share your laptops RAM, taking it away from application use. For watching multiple real-time graphs, I highly recommend a dedicated GPU. It comes in handy when you also want to hookup multiple monitors for the graphs. You don't need anything crazy, I think a Nvidia 3050 or better will suit your needs. Typically I'd say Nvidia is better, but for your need you can go either way.
Hope this helps
