I just bought a 16 inch Macbook Pro m3pro 36gb ram and 512 ssd for 1699 at costco.
This deal gives you extra storage space for $100 more but smaller screen

Great point. Others may have different opinions, but if you travel with any frequency then I think the 14" is the way to go. I much prefer to take the 14" machine along, compared to the 16" (work machine). It's lighter, obviously, but fits more comfortably in backpacks, on smaller tables, etc. Of course if you NEED the screen space for your work, then 16" it is .

Speaking of storage, since you mentioned 512GB versus the 1TB in this post. I thought I'd reiterate that these machines don't support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2!!

The Crucial X9 Pro and X10 Pro help to illustrate this. The X9 Pro supports "up to 1,050MB/s", while the X10 Pro supports "up to 2,100MB/s". On the MacBook Pro in this post (and others), you'll hardly see ANY difference between the two drives. Plugged in to a Windows desktop is when I see the X10 Pro reaching ~2,000MB/sec.

If you want to see speeds higher than ~1,000MB/s, you'll want to buy a Thunderbolt external SSD. Something like the SanDisk Pro-G40 (TB3). OR, buy a Thunderbolt NVMe enclosure (with NVMe drive, or supply your own). Something like the OWC Express 1M2.

I did the price match from microcenter a bit ago with best buy, even though it was out of state. Got the 48gb Max 16" for 2700.

For my usage this machine probably would have been good enough though 😆

You could still game on it on lower settings
I was actually surprised at how well my M1 Pro runs games. Tomb Rader at 1080p settings on medium plays great. Bioshock runs no problem too. But those are about 10 year old AAA games. Indie games like Hades absolutely fly maxed out and look gorgeous. I fire up Hades, plug MPB into my TV, and play with controller. And that's M1, these M3s have even better iGPUs. Bigger problem is to actually have a game be ported to Mac. Only about 30% of games in my steam library are Mac compatible. I wish apple would throw some kind of incentives to developer to port games to Mac, hardware is obviously capable of running flagship games from 10 years ago, maybe even newer games at low setting, not sure.

In fact, when it comes to playing indie games like Hades, or older AAA games, I prefer to play them on my MBP even though I own top of the line Legion 7 Pro gaming laptop. MBP is smaller, runs cooler, and fans are nowhere near as loud as on a gaming laptop where you have to have headphones on.

Any thought on how this compares to MACBOOK PRO 14* M4 PRO 24GB/512GB
SPACE BLACK MX2H3LL/A. They are about the same price. This has more storage and RAM. Is that better than the M4? I heard there is a big difference between M3 & M4

LOL! I came here to say something similar. When I saw the post, I thought "Hey! My machine! .

Agreed, it flies. I was lucky to "get in" on the Best Buy price match to Micro Center back in April of last year. $2,303 (pre-tax, for fair comparison). Of course I would have preferred to pay $504 less Big Grin, but that's how it goes.

I went from a 14" M1 Pro 16GB/1TB to this thing, and the RAM has been the biggest upgrade. I tend to have a lot of things open at the same time, and 2.25x RAM has made a huge difference in day to day usability. CPU upgrade not bad either, but not nearly the limiting factor that RAM was.
M3pro Ram has slower bandwidth 150gb/s than m1pro (200gb/s) according to apple

Depends on your core use case. I had the same dilemma and I went with the M4 Pro 24GB 512GB. My reasoning was that 24GB should be good enough for my level of video editing needs. Sure 32GB would make it more smoother but the difference shouldn't be that significant. Another reason was future proofing. M4 Pro is much better with AI workloads. This one should also fetch a better resale value down the line.

Storage isn't that big of a deal to me. I have a NAS plus some external drives. T5 support also makes it super convenient to use T5 SSDs if ever extra storage needed.

Oh SH*T!! I just realized that I thought this deal was for the 14" 1TB/36GB M3 Max, which is what I bought last year. Major facepalm... That was a bit stupid of me. Reading comprehension fail.

Thank you for pointing this out! Repped. It's an excellent point, yeah. It's something that I noticed last year when deciding whether to buy. Thankfully the M3 Max has a memory bandwidth of 300MB/sec (at least in my case with the 14-core). The 16 core has 400GB/s . Not sure if that 50MB/s difference would be "make or break" for many, but still something good to be aware of.

yea, when I wrote that m3pro was nerfed and people downvoted. I also got same spec but m3max after reading spec comparison last year ~$1800, stacked bunch of dcs to make it low price including visiting tax free state.
