Hackers can intercept or alter communications running through routers as well as remotely disable them, cutting off users' Internet access. They can also use compromised routers to assemble a botnet to disguise the origin of attacks against their ultimate targets.

TP-Link routers were among the various brands — including American ones — exploited by Chinese state-sponsored hackers who launched the massive Volt, Flax and Salt Typhoon attacks, U.S. officials have determined, according to some of the people familiar with the matter.

Those hacks targeted U.S. critical infrastructure such as water and transportation networks, as well as telecom and Internet firms. Investigators are also concerned about a series of Chinese state-sponsored hacks dubbed Camaro Dragon that used compromised TP-Link routers to target European foreign affairs entities.

I'm not sure how much weight I would put on this security-wise. I've not seen anybody indicate that TP-Link routers are intentionally leaking data, and I'm not sure their security practices have been any more or less embarrassing than everyone else's.

Examples:

Many models of Netgear routers could be easily hacked. https://www.tomsguide.com/news/ne...admin-hack

Asus had various models with pretty serious RCE exploits. https://www.tomsguide.com/news/th...-right-now

Here's one of the times it happened to Linksys: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/link...24934.html

Here's one on Synology routers: https://cybersecuritynews.com/syn...abilities/

I'm not convinced that router security on stock firmwares is substantially different for most of the manufacturers, but I dunno, maybe it is.

This is potentially one of the advantages of getting a router that can run something like OpenWRT, though. You can avoid some of the stupid security mistakes that the manufacturers make.

This router doesn't support OpenWRT, unfortunately. And it would potentially be a problem if TP-Link stopped providing updates in the event of a ban, so I guess that part is a wildcard.

China is ready to fvck the US and the rest of the world with TPlink router botnets and DDOS attacks.
