Who here remembers when these things could be had for $13.99 at Sears and you'd get 100% back in SYWR? lol

Good deal. Use mine to clean up the Weber ashes and vacuum the cars.

This or the 16 gallon 6hp one I got a few weeks back for $30? Debating on smaller one just for storage purposes since the other one is huge. Mainly be used for the car.

Would this be good to leave in the car? Well I guess I would need some sort of inverter to go with it.

then I think around 400 or so watts is the most you can get through the lighter socket, and I don't know that this 5.5 would run on that little bit. and maybe it would be easier to get something else

Personally I use a larger shop vac for both small (like car) and large jobs. I really have no use for a 2.5 gallon vac unless I owned a camper van or something. I'd keep the larger one and sacrifice the storage space. It will come in handy in way more situations than this tiny one.

I have an older model of this same Craftsman vac and it has been working great for a number of years. Since I like mine so much, I bought this new one for a friend. The design of the removable black top on this new one is different than the older one. This new one died in about 1 year with just occasional use in a small apartment. I looked online at some of the problems people had. It appears one problem is the on/off switch which fails. One of the posters went in to replace the switch and found it is one piece with the motor (so not worth trying to fix). There were also negative comments about trying to get warranty consideration through the Craftsman help number. I have not confirmed any of this information on my own, only what I read. I did buy this for $35 so this is a good price. Just be aware you might experience an issue like I did and you might not get service beyond the Lowes return period (90 days).

This will do the job just fine, but will clog any filter of any shop vac. They do make a "dust bag" that goes in there that you can use, but it will clog that up pretty quickly also. My favorite is to remove the filter and use a very long hose - Place the vacuum outside and use the hose to just suck all the ash outside. You have to be mindful of which way the cloud of ash will go though as you obviously don't want it blowing back inside. We use the ash in our flower beds, so I use the fireplace shovel to get as much out as I can before the vacuum trick.
