Crazy specs, but I think it's another one of these 10lbs of $hit in a 5lb bag things. According to reviews it's unusably loud while gaming. I have an ASUS Tuf that is the same. A big ugly laptop that practically melts when you actually try and use the GPU

What do you expect? Laptop cooling isn't there yet. I have the 4050 variant of this laptop and game on it daily and have encountered zero issues.

OP, please correct listing to reflect that the MGP (TDP) is only 75W for this model.

Can you help me understand what is MGP (TDP) and its significance?

The best answer is to watch this video from Jarrod's tech, a popular YouTuber who reviews gaming laptops: https://youtu.be/jMMrh6PpLI4?si=iOEgkNrlQvOnGJOo

The short version, is that it represents the maximum graphics power for the GPU (the graphics card). Last year, Nitro 5 models (12th Gen Intel) had a MGP of 140W for the same GPU (4060). This year the Nitro V (notice the V instead of the 5) models have an MGP of 75W.

This is NOT as bad as it may seem (though it's not good either). The thing is, 4050, 4060 and 4070 laptops GPUs were actually maxing out at around 105W anyway (voltage limit). The video from JT said it was approximately a 10% difference in FPS between the two MGP ratings. But still, 75W is going to have lower performance. Plus you need to be maxing out the performance of that laptop to hit those numbers. That makes the laptop louder as the fans have to be cranked up to cool the GPU when it's maxing out. Want it quieter? You need to lower the performance. It's not that this isn't true of other laptops. They ALL have this trade-off. But the lower your top level, the lower your performance. It's just a fact.

I will say that I'm a big fan of Acer laptops. They're typically a good value. This model has a 100% sRGB screen, which is better than previous models that were 45% NTSC, and it has 32GB of DDR RAM. I've owned an Acer Nitro 5 3050 ti model and I currently own an Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 with a 4050. Both were good laptops. They do get loud, but that's common to most gaming laptops. You want more performance, get some noise cancelling headphones! :-)

How's the build quality on this? I really like the Lenovo Legion - does it compare?

The build quality is pretty good. They cheaped out heavily on speakers/cooling/speakers so I had to return mine. I had 0 issues with it and it's a great machine but I just couldn't stand the speakers and 70db fans.

I've never owned a laptop for gaming because I prefer the modularity of a desktop, but I am amazed that we're in 2025, probably 25ish years into laptop gaming and cooling hasn't been figured out.

You are seeing this as if the components they are trying to cool are always the same. Every time a new tech comes, new cooling issues show up.

Heat is a function of power; the power has t changed that much. The efficiency of the chips has changed, the functions that the chips run has changed, the thermodynamics of heat removed has not changed.

Thoughts on using this as a work laptop? The 32GB has me interested for heavy excel / data analysis...

Laptop cooling absolutely is there. Maybe not on this.

I've used a laptop as a desktop replacement for gaming for over a decade now. They are excellent, if you got the cash.

This needs a 4060ti or 4070 for this price though. There has been an ASUS for $750 with a 4060ti.

Rare deals are worth waiting for. This isn't terrible. You could wait to squeeze another $50 of value out of it.
