I'm not sure why someone trade in a somewhat desirable phone, and obligate themselves to a 24 month contract for this phone.16 Pro, yes.16e, no.

Because most people don't change carriers every few months or even years, I have 7 lines plus home internet through T-Mobile for $130 plus taxes and fees, who's gonna give me that deal now? nobody will and so the 'contract' can be whatever length because I'm not leaving

16 Pro, yes.

16e, no.

Because it's free if you trade in an outdated phone. You can sell the 16 for a lot more. If you're staying with T-Mobile, then who cares how long the terms are? Very hard to get a better deal than TMO with post-paid.

We have Simple Choice. If done at Costco, the 16e comes out to about $60 after taxes here in California. (T-mobile giving $500 trade in and Costco giving $100 card)
That's without adding a line?

iphone 16e 256GB (IMO the minimum)
$699

Trade-in, iphone 6s for $250

Out of pocket cost over 24 months
$699 - $250 = $449 + (Tax on $699)
----------------------------------------------

$250 = Monthly credit of $10.42 over 24 months
$450 = Monthly bill increase of $18.75 over 24 months.
--------
$700

Initial cost is around $65 (taxes). Then my monthly bill will go up $18.75 for 24 months.

In conclusion $450 + $65 = $515 total.

Thanks for reminding me of the Costco bonus. They also waive activation fees?

Since I'd be dumping my 12 mini for the $500 I'd been debating about the 16e vs the iPhone 14 and I'll actually get two wins with the 16e vs the flagship:
  • Dumping the lighting connector once and for all
(I'd migrated my work phone to the iPhone 15)
  • Getting potentially increased compatibility with one of my wireless chargers
Anyone considering daily driving the 16e vs. a flagship iPhone model should give some consideration to the camera differences. However, I personally won't be using my 16e for any photography (it's basically an Apple account authentication platform for me). I am looking forward to potentially having an iPhone that works with my Belkin TrueFreedom charger (whose foreign object detection gets triggered by MagSafe).

Good luck!
Jon

Probably because people are on a grandfathered plan and get $500 for their old ass phone. Upgrading to 16e is like less than 100 out of pocket if you do it at Costco for the 128gb and less than 200 for the 256gb.

Where can you find info about prices at Costco? Sorry if this is a dumb question

I have a different plan, so they are only offering $500 trade for my 13. The 16 comes to $13.50 a month and 16c comes to $4.50 a month. I'm still not sure which one to choose.

For ~$5 more go with the 16 pro. The camera difference alone makes it worth it IMO

With trade in, what is the reason to go with 16e instead of 16?
This article has a great comparison of the two models.
