Cool! I'm picking up one on Thursday at BB. Did you shuck it or check the serial number?

Some are reporting Barracuda drives and other Exos drives.

Used CrystalDiskInfo, mine is an EXOS. I haven't heard any 24TBs being Barracuda drives. Are you sure you're not mistaking the 20TB drive?

I am not shucking it, no. I bought this because it has an external enclosure as an alternative to full blown NAS.

I'm not 100% sure. Here is another thread on SD:

Thanks for the info dcpoor.

well shit that's concerning. glad I didn't see that before I bought or may not have taken the risk.

I got the EXOS and I love this drive. It surpassed all my expectations, but the single thing that bothers me about it is that sometimes there's a clicking sound that's obviously due to being a HDD.

my office is dead quiet so I can hear it.

For my SD'ers another tip. If you're storing it somewhere where your'e not looking at it, cut the middle foam bottom off and mount it vertically on that foam. It cuts down the vibration noise significantly!

They've definitely cleared out of the units housing 24tb Exos drives. I received the two that I ordered earlier this week and both are Barracuda drives, much like the recent Reddit posts are reporting.
I'm still going to keep them since they're being used for mirroring media, but I definitely would have liked to get the Exos variants instead.

sounds like production dates from 12/2024 and older are EXOS.
2/2025 are Barracuda, not sure about drives from 1/2025

if you're not shucking and using this as a NAS, are you still running it 24/7?

Are these 7200rpm drives? I'm looking to get one for 4K UHD streaming in plex and wouldn't trust 5400rpm for that.
