I was thinking about purchasing this through Newegg and posting the deal here, but seeing mixed reviews about the seller 6th Ave Electronics selling returned or open items. Decided to go with Amazon Resale. They have 6 remaining "Like New" units for $343. Figured I'd give it a shot. You have to scroll all the way down the "other options" list to find it.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N3PQM5N
Check out your local Best Buy for open box. I currently see $283 to $323 price depending on condition.
It should be noted that the 3rd party seller is 6Ave (6th Avenue). They have been known to deal in the gray market and had a not so good reputation in the past. I don't know if things have changed since the ownership and name change though. Panasonic does not have an online list of approved dealers so I was not able to verify if 6Ave is an authorized dealer or not. I saw this deal earlier last week and was going to post it until I saw who the seller was and looked into them.

Bruh why the heck would you pay this much for a bluray player? An Xbox can do 4K UHD, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos full spec, and Chroma 4:4:4 playback all natively for the same price or less. Plus it can do netflix, emby, and play games if you like console gaming. It can also do 12bit video, full RGB and that wack ass YCBR full range. It can also pass through 9.1.4 and decode the full spec DTS MA. There is literally no reason to get something like this. Snake oil.

It supports DV for games not movies. Don't get me wrong the Xbox is a serviceable player but this is definitely a step up from that.

Beware of GCX.raise.com! There are lots of negative feedback"ID Verification Required to Purchase???Created my account after hearing about Raise on a podcast. Loaded $250 worth of gift cards in my cart and checked out. Immediately got an email that my order had been cancelled and when I tried to load them again, my account was suspended. To remove the account suspension, I would have to send them pictures of my ID or passport. REALLY??? No thank you. I am not selling anything, you should not need ID verification from me. Was looking forward to using this service...a LOT. But this is just shady.
This exact same thing happened to me. It was never made clear I needed to provide ID to buy a gift card in the first place.

Bruh, HCX Processor isn't snake oil. Xbox doesn't have that. That's one of the many reasons this is far superior than using your gaming system.

I'm not saying this is good or bad deal. I need education. I prefer to own the media and don't have the bandwidth to download. I own an older Pioneer blueray with upconversion. My question is how the Panasonic may be better.

There's too many advantages to list. The Panasonic UB820 is arguably the best 4k player under $500. If you don't need Dolby Vision then check out the Panasonic UB420. The UB420 has the same picture and audio quality but it doesn't have Dolby Vision.

Your best bet is to check out some professional reviews and comparisons to other players. Take what you read on SD with a grain of salt, including what I say.

Had one plugged to sony a80j 77in oled with XR processor

Returned it. Quality wasn't at all better than using firetv max w/ netlfix 4k DV content

Imagine ps5 pro would do same

Blu ray users are brain washed

Not true at all. I have a PS5 Pro and the UB820.
The Pro's 4K movie functionality is the exact same as the base PS5 and Xbox.
They don't offer Dolby Vision. And there's no HDR optimization.

If you are looking for the best possible movie experience, and you have a good Dolby Vision TV. The UB820 is the way to go.
It comes down to your setup. OLEDs and TVs with full array LED panels would show the most of what HDR DV content can do.

Consoles are more like convenient 4K players. They get the job done, and they still look better than any streaming service content. Not saying they are bad. They just aren't the "best".

People who buy the UB820 are looking for the best possible representation of what physical media has to offer. Unless you can get your hands on an Oppo or Panasonic 9000. Both of those are hard to find or sold by 3rd party these days.
And since physical media is dying, it's only a matter of time before Panasonic stops making these. Then the price really goes up.

I have this. It's great. Played my Blu-ray copy of STAR TREK FIRST CONTACT and was blown away by the quality. The 4K upscaling is no joke. I can't imagine the 4K version of that movie being even better. "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" are astounding in 4K. Planning to go broke upgrading my collection to 4K. 😀

If the 4k upscaling is that good, why not save your money and be content with full HD?

I mean, the day is coming when upscaling will make old DVDs look like 4k or even 8k, so there will be diminishing returns on the massive cost of upgrading to 4k.

You would be better off putting resources into upgrading your audio to 7.2.4 surround if you haven't already. Invest once in quality speakers (Klipsch RP or better) and they will last 20-30+ years - a much better ROI than upgrading from HD to 4k to 8k to whatever the next format will be.

Does your old pioneer player play 4K UHD?
So... I'm in the same boat. I need some education as well, and I really couldn't find it in the internet.

I have a Sony 77A80CJ (Costco version) TV.

I just bought this: Sony - BDP-S6700 Streaming 4K Upscaling Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-ray Player

I'm watching shows/movies from the DVD collection at my library. I noticed they have ZERO 4K DVDs, only standard and Blu Rays. I don't intend to rent or purchase 4K DVDs.

While, I understand this Blu Ray player is older, would I see any difference between the player I just purchased VS this one? Again, knowing I won't be watching 4K DVDs.

Thanks

This player is for someone that wants to enjoy physical media in the absolute best quality. I own both a PS5 and an Series X and I absolutely don't regret purchasing this unit.

Having compared this(& 420) and 9000,OPPO.
I would add the benefit of those two isn't really worth the much higher price imo.
TBH the bigger benefit is on the audio side, if you have setup to take advantage of it.

Unlikely disc is going anywhere anytime soon.
We are at a point where content has surpassed the capabilities of equipment.

It would but not worth the cost imo.
You could get a less expensive player like Sony x700.
I'm not sure that is worth the cost either though.

That's the thing. I got that Blu Ray 4K Upscaling player as an open box from Best Buy. It was marked in "fair condition." I opened it in the BB store after I picked it up. I don't think it was every plugged in. Looked brand new. It was $42.

I couldn't pass up that deal knowing that I'm 95% sure I'll never own/rent a 4K DVD.

Thx

The Sony UBP-X800M2 has SACD and DVD-A if that is important to you. I've been checking review sites that say the Panasonic UB820 is wonderful but quantify why. AudioScienceReview (granted, Audio focus and not Video) gives the Panasonic UB820 a lackluster review.
