The point is many cats will not drink from something they do not perceive as constantly moving water (for example a stream or creek). Plus the constant on / off of the pump with motion would be very hard on the pump's longevity and it may also dissuade pets as they might not like the fact their water source clicks / knocks everytime they walk by it

And FWIW tiny pump pulls so few watts the motion detectors' energy use might completely negate any energy savings of an on / off cycle....we're talking like 1.5-3w for the pump to run. Your cell phone charger uses more power when NOT in use.

Always check the price of replacement filters before purchasing one of these.

This fountain is cheap, but compared to the ones in the $25 range, it's disposable garbage. Tiny feeble pump, thin walled plastic, and somehow builds up bacteria faster than any other fountain I've seen.

This looks really nice. Big size and auto shutoff will help with longevity. I had a smaller one for my cats and it died quickly after I forgot to refill a few times, particularly when my dogs wanted it too.

Needs a motion detector so it's not on 24/7 even when your pet is sleeping

just find some pennies made before 82 and toss them in ... drastically decreases build up in 'standing' water

or some copper wire pieces

I had a pet water fountain once. It ran away after someone left the gate open. I'm sure that little water fountain is still roaming around the streets all alone.

Get the ones where you can lift the bowl off the stand and the only thing in the bowl is a sponge and a filter. The propeller is embedded in the bowl base and the motor stays on the base.

I feel like some of these are filter sales devices. Our personal experience was that after having to repetitively "deep clean" one that used a standard aquarium filter ... over, and over, and over again ... we just started adding extra water to canned food after we were forced to switch from dry anyhow.

I just have a massive like two gallon steel mixing bowl I probably got for $5 at Walmart, and wash it out and refill it every day. Ultimate slickdeal.

PEKTACO is by far the best I've tried and I'll never look for another cat fountain. One of the cheaper ones I've tried before, the filter would eventually get clogged and water would leak on the floor.. the pektaco has never leaked and is so quiet my cats love it.

This is not a good idea. Too much leeching into the water could cause harm. Better to just wash everything out regularly.
