Anyone have any longer-term experience with these? Seems like a lot of cost and additional moving parts for a usually simple appliance.

I've had one of the older GE Geospring hybrid water heaters for 11-12 years. I live alone so I only run it in heat pump mode. I can vouch for the savings, in a low-cost (.06/kwh) area, my electric bill dropped about $30/month, and it continues to save me money. I only recently had to change the heating elements and have done virtually no maintenance on it (I've never flushed it until now, never changed the anode, never blown out the evaporator until now, only cleaned the filter when the alarm was beeping). I changed the heating elements, fired it back up and it's still running well. I feel pretty confident about the enamel coating process of the inside of the tank, I think it'll last another 10 years as long as I start doing the recommended maintenance. Apparently GE is launching a new hybrid water heater soon,

How difficult are these to install/replace out a conventional water heater. Is it plug and play with the water in/out and power or are there extra connections needed?

If you have a gas hot water heater, these things will probably never pay for themselves, but in some parts of US they are phasing out natural gas, and electric water heaters can be very expensive. A heat pump style could cut your electricity use in half or more. Quicker payback period in that case.

Replaced an old electric with a similar model about 3-4 years ago. The list price was ~2000, with 1K utility rebate. All plumbing companies wanted $2k for installation, compared to $500 for regular one.
I ended up installing myself. The big difference is that the water connections are from the bottom and middle, as opposed to from the top on old unit. Just got a few copper pipes and sharkbite connectors of various types. A the same time I added a water mixer to increase water volume.
Except for one time when I couldnt get it out of "vacation" mode without reset - it has worked fine. It is a little loud compared to old unit. But I knew it going in - common complaint about these.

Do you see any savings with the replacement?

honestly, I cant say. I added more electric usage overall with other appliances. My feeling is - there is some savings. But I don't have hard data.

I currently have a regular electric water tank. Seems like this would save money. Any reference on noise? Our water heater is in the unfinished part of the basement which is under our living room. Worried it may be noticeable.

We ordered one on the last deal for store pickup. It was rewrapped on the bottom of the box. Once hooked up, it was leaking like a sieve on the side. So it must have been smashed to bits to have come out of the box the way it did.

Our local HD had the regular edition (only difference between the two models is the automatic shutoff valve and sensor that you get in the second box). So they just let us exchange the heater and get it for the same sale price. It would have been a real pain otherwise. Especially since literally the day after we ordered, the old water started leaking out the bottom. Worst luck ever. We couldn't even switch back to the old one.

It's basically an air conditioner when running. So you need to run a condensate line for all the moisture it's going to suck out of the air. For us, where it's in the garage next to a wall, I simply drilled a hole through the block and ran the pipe out there. The condensate line (and figuring out where it will drain) is the only difference with installation. That and this is taller than older heaters. So if your pipes are low and coming out on top, you might need to adjust things there.

We have a cement block house and it's in the garage. Only way I can hear it is if I'm close to the garage door entrance. But if it's in your house, I don't know how you wouldn't hear it. Whether it's objectionable would be the question. It's definitely got a real hum to it.

No different then a standard electric water heater (hot and cold water lines and power). There's an optimal duct you can install to suck in heat from an attic or a different space but depending on where your water heater is it's not necessary.

Oh I guess there's an extra line for the "AC" part that drains the condensation but I just used a small pipe and let it drip into a bucket. But it's the same pipe install as the water lines so it's not any more difficult to do.

Mine is about the equivalent of a window AC I would say. It definitely makes noise but since it's in the garage I can't hear it over regular TV watching. Not sure how insulated your basement is but if you run a decent sized fan down there you could test the noise level I think.

I'm in Florida so I can pretty much have it running on heat pump 24/7 so the savings is definitely there. In our peak of winter the most power it consumed in a day was 2.4kwh. Not exactly sure what the old one was like but on average (according to Google) a similar standard water heater could use a good 9+kwh per day. So will it take time to pay for itself? Sure. But it's definitely saving me money.

I've had one for 2 years now and it definitely has saved us money. Just note that this will only save you money if you have to go electric or if you have solar. Natural gas usually will be cheaper in most cases but these heat pump water heaters are the best option if you have to use electricity. With electricity averaging 12ยข/kwh for me, my rheem heat pump water heater has consumed 1600kwh which results in a cost of ~$200 for a year or hot water. That's also using the "high demand" mode which uses the heating element for quicker recovery. If you run it in the default "Energy saver" mode it will cost you ~$100-150 per year.
Only issue with these units is the leak sensor is way too sensitive and triggers even though my tank doesn't have a leak, even the smallest amount of moisture like condensation can trigger it. I simply removed the leak sensor and it's been fine.
