Edit: Looks like any mild all-purpose cleaner like simply green or dollar store's "Totally Awesome" should work for heavy soil. For lighter soil, warm water and vinegar 50-50 seems to be what folks are recommending online.

If you install wet the dust will make concrete (not literal) and cleaning of unit will require soaking.
Also I would recommend buying at least 2 so you clean and dry one while using the other.
Best advice find an air filter company that services mechanical contractors and cut your cost in 1/2.
Also change your filter housing to 4" or 5" pleated if you can. Last longer, more surface area and works way better than 1" trash from your local food store or Home Depot.

Thanks for your advice. I find the information you provided very useful. I just got done watching a YouTube video where the technician is saying that almost no one takes care of these on the long term.
I am "that" guy that does clean these however. I clean mine several times a year ever since I bought the house years ago. This will be my second as I do want to just swap and then clean the other filter without having to wait for it to dry for example.
I'll probably look into the filter housing options in the furture when I eventually replace the unit.
My home has 2 vents at 12x24x1 and 20x30x1, so the replacement filters kinda get expensive for us. Hoping that these will last several years - one year will probably get us in the positive ROI territory I suppose.

Round numbers, using the HDX or whatever Lowe's sells at approx $5/filter = $20 year. If I value my time at $20/hour, which in reality for most things is probably significantly higher, and I spend an hour a year cleaning this, plus whatever supplies I need to clean, do I ever break even, let alone realize ROI?

Alternatively, as someone else suggested in this thread, just throw it in the dishwasher with Cascade free & clear tablets (I am sure there are cheaper alternatives too) - I do this anyway for my range hood filters every few months; I can use the same cycle to do both together between 2nd and 3rd rack.
