Are these as good as the one-time-use merv 8 filters?

Why 12x12 costs the same as 24x24?

This seems like a great deal but the reviews are naturally skewed towards recently after purchase and I share some of the concerns around longevity, particularly with mold from incomplete drying. Do any HVAC professionals here have any experience with this type of filter? Or anyone who has used one for 2 or more years and put it through some cleaning cycles?

Material cost is negligeable. Same for a Nike shoes size 7 vs. size 11.

That little bottle of cleaning chemical costs $25! That is quite high.. There has to be a way to DIY the solution at home - any suggestions on this? I would think some combination of distilled water, isoprophyl alcohol, vinegar and dish washing soap ought to do the trick..

Edit: Looks like any mild all-purpose cleaner like simply green or dollar store's "Totally Awesome" should work for heavy soil. For lighter soil, warm water and vinegar 50-50 seems to be what folks are recommending online.

My neighbor hates electrostatic filter when it is time to wash it. Not sure if you are saving much, I would only considered it if it catches more stuff and you really need it, otherwise not much savings.

I am in Air conditioning. You will abandon this in time. The cleaning if not done properly makes things unusable.

If you install wet the dust will make concrete (not literal) and cleaning of unit will require soaking.

Also I would recommend buying at least 2 so you clean and dry one while using the other.

Best advice find an air filter company that services mechanical contractors and cut your cost in 1/2.

Also change your filter housing to 4" or 5" pleated if you can. Last longer, more surface area and works way better than 1" trash from your local food store or Home Depot.

Thanks for your advice. I find the information you provided very useful. I just got done watching a YouTube video where the technician is saying that almost no one takes care of these on the long term.

I am "that" guy that does clean these however. I clean mine several times a year ever since I bought the house years ago. This will be my second as I do want to just swap and then clean the other filter without having to wait for it to dry for example.

I'll probably look into the filter housing options in the furture when I eventually replace the unit.

Pulled the trigger and bought 1 each for now. If this works well, I will get 1 each in the future for my vents so I can easily swap when cleaning.
My home has 2 vents at 12x24x1 and 20x30x1, so the replacement filters kinda get expensive for us. Hoping that these will last several years - one year will probably get us in the positive ROI territory I suppose.

Is your ROI calculation valuing your time at $0? Just saying...

Round numbers, using the HDX or whatever Lowe's sells at approx $5/filter = $20 year. If I value my time at $20/hour, which in reality for most things is probably significantly higher, and I spend an hour a year cleaning this, plus whatever supplies I need to clean, do I ever break even, let alone realize ROI?

Seems like a cool idea but for me I don't think it's a fit. Now if I only had to clean it annually, that would change everything.

Dishwasher top shelf non chlorine Cascade Free. Turn off heat dry. Remove. Place in garage or second bath to dry. Done.

We will see if expectations and reality match after a year, but it seems ~5-10 mins work for each clean cycle, which does not seem that much to me. Spray the filter with some all purpose cleaner, let it soak a few minutes, spray garden hose to clear out. Then put it on the backyard table to let air dry under the sun.

Alternatively, as someone else suggested in this thread, just throw it in the dishwasher with Cascade free & clear tablets (I am sure there are cheaper alternatives too) - I do this anyway for my range hood filters every few months; I can use the same cycle to do both together between 2nd and 3rd rack.
