Yeah, I'm not gonna say it's okay for Amazon to put all these garbage ads on the Fire stick. It really makes the experience sluggish. But what's the alternative? The built in apps on my LG, Roky, and Sony TV also have ads and is also very slow. A $160 Apple TV? Yikes, you're going to compare that thing to $25 dongle! I have one of these things on all 3 of my TV's for less than half that.

If you mod these or do a lot of add-ons get the onn. These start to slow down bad with bloatware and too much stuff taking memory.

The Apple TV is the best option if you want an ad-free experience. The Fire TV is on the other end of the spectrum, and amongst the worst. That being said, it does have its place. I use the Apple TV for streaming on our main TV. But I bought the Fire TV 4K Max at last thanksgiving for use with my computer monitor. If I want to watch something on my computer monitor, it's easier to have a streaming stick hooked up to an alternate HDMI port and use a remote, than use the mouse and keyboard. Also, many streaming services provide lower quality streams via a browser.

When on a sale, the 4K Max is cheap enough for use as a secondary streaming device. No way am I going to spend $130 to $150 on a second Apple TV, for just occasional use on an alternate screen. And at least the Max is snappy enough — definitely not as good as the Apple TV, but good enough for the price. If you know what you want to watch, just simply ignore the ads, and navigate directly to the app of choice and you're good to go. The biggest problem with ads on many streaming sticks is not the ad itself, but that the ads take up processing power, making navigation sluggish.

I also have the Chromecast with Google TV 4K, that I use on our second TV (which barely gets used). That device is a few years old now does feel slightly more sluggish compared to the Fire TV 4K Max. But it's not that big a difference, and the overall experience is otherwise quite similar between the two.

Like another commenter said, amongst the options in sale, get the Max version — it's just $5 more and will be much snappier; something you'll appreciate even if you don't need 4K.

Been on Fire TV OS ecosystem for the last 5 years due to mainly the affordability of Fire sticks and getting them dirt cheap on Amazon (was getting them lower than these prices, plus all kind of promos that made them essentially free). Have had 4K Max 1st gen, now the 2nd gen

I gotta say I'm just realizing how much I hate it... There is a ton of ads on the homescreen and they let you add only 5 or 6 of your apps to the homescreen bc they wanna use the rest of the screen for the countless ads and pushing you 'Free' content from Freeve that has 55 ads per episode. To reach the rest of your apps, you must press at least 10 buttons. There is no customization option to change this - cannot add more of your apps to homescreen than they intended (5-6)

Another thing, I have ParamountPlus and if you search for a movie that is on P+, Fire os will push you to sign up for 7-day trial through Paramount channel on Prime as default option instead of redirecting you to P+ app that you have... If you are not vigilant enough you might end up in the trap

Not to mention, these sticks freeze if you use VPN. Got the 2nd gen Max version hoping it will help with the lag, it didnt.

Not trashing the deal, it is as low as they get these days, exvept maybe Prime Day, but do your research and beware of the limitations of the system

Does the Apple TV have a closed ecosystem that doesnt allow installation of 3rd party apps like it is on iOS?

Yes, it's pretty closed and no way to jailbreak it. You have to contend with whatever apps are available on the iOS App Store. That being said, it has all the streaming services, and the best user-experience amongst any streaming device.

Additional hint for Apple TV users — if you download the Infuse app on Apple TV (it's not free; it's a subscription based app, but you can buy a lifetime license), the app will play pretty much any format natively (without need for any transcoding). The app doesn't rely on the device's in-built codecs like most other apps. The developers instead purchase codecs directly and package them within the app. I used to keep the NVidia Shield around just for Kodi, but I sold it once I moved to Infuse.

I also have an offer for 20% off when I trade in a device. I've always had this and never used it so not sure if it's a one time use or if it's an offer they always run.
No, the 20% offer comes back eventually, if you use it. Though it may take some months. I've bought a couple Fire devices using the trade-in offer, and it's back again now. Used to be better and they'd give you 20% off the list price. Now it's only 20% off after any other discounts.

Every time someone mentions a Firestick deal on here, we get Apple fanboys telling us to spend 10x the amount on an AppleTV. It's like the exact opposite of the purpose of this site. Sorry, but I have 10 Firesticks that work perfectly well and I'm not about to drop several grand on AppleTVs.

Well, that is a huge deal breaker. Same as with iPhones.

I'll have to stick to Android. That said, I'm done with Fire OS. Not sure how Google's new tv box is with respect to ads and home screen customization

I don't know what he's talking about. Fire stick 4k max is a ridiculously powerful device for $40.
I did the "jail break" years ago and have free paid content ie ufc PPV / HBO.

And what's more decadent... having one TV with an Apple TV or 10 TVs with Firesticks?

The 20% doesn't seem to stack with this promotion code.
