Bought this years ago,,,, junk. Never ending failures, lackluster support.

Worst was when Rheem approved exchange but Home Depot wouldn't honor exchange, that's after brought defective water heater back to customer service counter. Spend hours in a deadlock with Home Depot manager and Rheem on the phone with each other….

Now I got a dumb water heater

Leak sensor faulty-had to bypass to get unit to open valve and operate

Replaced heat pump temp sensor and still reports heat pump failures

Had do disconnect wifi , due to constant alarms

When heat pump ran-it was very loud

Overall junk and no rheem support

Certainly didn't save any on utility bills

AI to the rescue:
When comparing ProTerra heat pump water heaters in 120V and 240V, the 120V models offer a simpler, plug-in installation, making them ideal for replacing gas units or upgrading to high efficiency without needing a 240V electrical upgrade. 240V models offer faster heating and potentially better performance in colder climates but require a more complex installation.
Here's a more detailed comparison:
120V ProTerra Plug-in Heat Pump Water Heaters:

Installation: Simpler, plug-in design; no need for 240V electrical work.
Ideal for: Drop-in gas unit replacement, high-efficiency upgrades without electrical panel upgrades.
Efficiency: Still highly efficient, offering up to 5x the efficiency of a standard gas water heater.
Models: Available in dedicated and shared circuit models.
Example: Rheem ProTerra Plug-in Heat Pump Water Heater with HydroBoost plugs into any standard 120V outlet.
240V ProTerra Heat Pump Water Heaters:

Installation: Requires 240V electrical service and potentially more complex installation.
Ideal for: Larger homes with high hot water demand, potentially better performance in colder climates.
Efficiency: Still highly efficient, but may require more electrical infrastructure.
Faster Heating: 240V resistive elements heat water faster than 120V.
Example: 240V models often have larger tank sizes and faster recovery times.

Call a plumber unless you're very familiar with code concerning gas piping and exhaust. It's not worth killing your whole family to save $500 in labor.

Dunno... Have it for a year. Great "fire and forget" product. Keeps water hot and basement cool and try.
The only drawback is that you cannot permanently switch it to "electrical only" mode for winter months: you have to create a weird schedule. Rheem is aware of it, but their only suggestion was to create a schedule to use heat pump for some time.
Other than that: no complaints whatsoever.

I've looked at these before and this is exactly why I stayed the f away! You see MANY MANY stories like this. Between those kind of headaches and the cost, there's no savings in them.

Your standard basic water heater is still the overall most cost efficient solution for tank types provided you actually maintain it...as in flush once or twice a year, replace the anode rod every couple years, etc.
Yup! I bought my house in 2021, it was built in 2003. just replaced the 20+ yr old original water heater in 2023. I changed the 40gal gas to a 50gal AO Smith cheapy. Flushed it last year and will flush again this year and put new rod in.

Ugh. Had a well written response, but when I went to reply, SlickDeals just said "An error has occurred" and I lost it.

Too lazy to rewrite everything. But advice to the guy dealing with the pilot light going out - if the water heater is on the third floor and it is not leaking water, absolutely consider replacing the thermocoupler, gas valve, etc. before replacing the whole unit. Many water heaters have generic repair kits that contain the common wear items. Your back will thank you for not having to lug one up and down three stories.

I know some people have had issues, but I have been very happy with mine. I got the ProTerra 80 gallon about a year and a half ago and have been saving about $30 of month, give or take.

Excellent deal - I bought this from HD ~2 years ago in Cali and have been very happy with it. I set it to always run on Heat Pump. On average, this costs ~10 bucks on CA electricity rate to run. I never run it on Resistance heater, never needed to.

Note that there is another version that runs on Heat Pump only that can plug into a 120V outlet. When on heat pump, expect it to pull 300W. It cools down my garage in the summer so that's a plus.

Note that most of negative reviews associated with the 120V model (this is the 240V model) are really to people's dumbasserry of not knowing the difference between the HP only model and the Hybrid model.

Hey guys. I'm a new house owner. I have 2 gas-powered water heaters in my home. One of them (on the 3rd floor) appears to be broken. It stopped working after I moved in, but it's expected and my inspector noted it was over 10 years old and will likely need to be replaced soon.

It is worth having someone take a look at it to see if it can be fixed before I order a new one? If I order a new one, how hard is it to install myself? I want to save some money
FWIW - I did the install myself. Water heaters are generally easy to install - cold water goes it, hot water goes out. I would opt for the largest tank you can fit wherever you are storing it. The first time you run it, it will take a while to get the water up to 120F (or 140F, depending on your settings). Once the tank is up to temperature, it shouldn't require more than pennies a day to run.

If you have a gas water heater you might want to consider replacing it with another gas water heater. Or tankless gas water heater. Those are normally more efficient than a heat pump.

I have a boiler which turned out to be more efficient than a heat pump. When i was looking into it a few years ago.

I think gas ones are more difficult to install? Which one do you have?

Also idk if I need the largest b/c the one that needs to be replaced only services the master bedroom on the 3rd floor. My primary one is in the basement that services the rest of the house

Gas is definitely harder to installed - my city requires me to build bollards for gas tanked water heaters (but not so for wall mounted tankless WHs)

I have the 80 gallon size, the 240V version, but I never run it on resistive heater so it pulls essentially 300W only when on HP.

If you can't, then I would go with whatever you can fit in your bedroom. Think about it this way, if you are going to pull what I do (i.e. running it on HP only when electricity is off peak) when I have families over during peak (essentially 4-9pm) I have to ensure I have enough hot water capacity. To its credit, I never ever run out of hot water. Then again, I have the 80 gallon size so my margin for use is pretty large.

What do you mean more efficient? They use different sources of heat. Only one of them can be run from renewable energy like solar or wind. The other requires a constant supply of fossil fuels.

Ive owned mine sine 1/22 with no complaints so far. I run it exclusively in heat pump mode to save energy and it makes plenty of hot water for our needs. Its in my basement, which can be damp during the winter, and it dehumidifies and dries the air. The negative reviews are worrisome and I probably wouldn't have bought it if the same amount of complaints had existed at the time. There are incentives with my local power company that paid about 1/3rd the cost, and it was on sale at time of purchase:

Subtotal $1,699.00
Discount -$800.00
Shipping $75.00
Sales Tax $58.44

Order Total $1,032.44

A beat up delivery truck subcontracted by Home Depot arrived to deliver it. The heater was on its side laying on the floor of the truck. Upon opening the box, there was a small dent in the side of the heater, which didnt surprise me. I called Home Depot CS and spoke nicely with the agent helping me. She was able to approve a $250 damage credit to my visa. I would rather have swapped it our for an undamaged heater, but my other water heater was leaking and had already been removed.

So for around $600 installed (by myself) after all the credits and new plumbing, I figured if the compressor failed, Id still be able to use only the heating coils to heat the water (by selecting that mode).

The power saving already paid for the enter heater replacement a year ago, but I also got some tremendous discounts while investing a great deal of time.

Fingers crossed that it lasts a while longer!
