ST/TF/TW unlocks require a plan purchase. So you can no longer activate a new TF branded phone on an existing plan and get it unlocked. This is a new unlock policy since July 2024. The wording "This deal is good for existing straighttalk customers." is not entirely true if the idea is to unlock on an existing plan.

You can disable anything in Android with adb. Also realizing that most people don't know this but once you disable Device Pulse and Mobile Services on TF branded Androids, you will no longer get auto-installed bloatware. I disable these before connecting to WiFi.

Even as a "power user" I don't care about unlocking the bootloader if it takes 2 minutes to disable the two bloatware packages. I noticed that TF also stopped using the TF splash screen, at least on the midrange Androids, which gets rid of another reason to load the stock ROM.

It will unlock on day 61 after activation. It only requires initial service activation, no renewals needed. It should unlock automatically remotely when connected to wifi.

I'm not 100% sure but I thought some were successful in activating a ST phone with TF. I don't know what the exact process is.
Have to contact support & get a rep to rebrand - many reps will just say it can't be done because they don't have a clue how to do anything that's not written in the manual. TF/TW/ST are always YMMV without the right rep.

if i have a Straight Talk sim card from the November iphone 13 deal....

can i pop that sim card into this phone and activate it for one month, and then unlock the Razr phone after two months? using the same sim card from previously?

Sim cards are registered to each phone IMEI so while it might work temporarily for service it likely will not qualify phone for unlocking as it's still registered to the original phone. Most users will not recommend sim swapping because it can cause issues that are a pain to get fixed. Best to just activate with the sim that comes with the phone & wait the 60 days.

I see the following in their unlocking policy page.

"For cellphones Activated with new service on the Verizon network on or after November 23, 2021, at least sixty (60) days must have elapsed since the cellphone was activated."

Source: https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com

Notice how they sneaked in the word "new" in there.

Page was updated in July 2024
This is the key term - "The cellphone was activated with TracFone service by purchasing and redeeming an airtime plan on that specific phone ("Activation")"

I got denied unlock after 60 days already for activating on an existing line, had to purchase a new plan and restart the 60 day clock. Before you could and I did, but it doesn't work anymore

Do you know of any software differences between ST/TW version versus the Metro version. I don't care about the unlock timeframe but I thought getting an unlocked bootloader is essential for using adb and other reasons

Thanks.
I hope one day to try it and get a rep that knows how to do it properly.

Recently I got a moto stylus from metro and one from boost. With the same apps installed, the boost version battery life lasts significantly longer than the metro version. Plus, when using wireless base to charge, the metro version will turn off charging when reaching 100% but won't turn back on charging when the battery depletes. It is necessary to physically lift the phone from the base and set it back down. With the boost mobile model it will also stop the charge at 100%, but will automatically turn it back on when the charge decreases to about 95%. So definitely the software version on metro Android phones is quite different from others like boost. The battery life difference persists even if disabling metro specific software so this is from the firmware. Definitely much happier with the boost version. I saw something similar with an A53 from metro and one from tracfone. The tracfone having better battery life, though i didn't make the connection with the firmware at the time as the metro A53 has had about a year longer of use service compared to the tracfone. By the way this is different even when using both devices on wifi. So 5G use does not factor in.

Was anyone able to figure out what the Asurion Warranty deductible is? The sale web page just says the below, an the link to the terms is just a stock link to asurion that doesn't say what you're buying. So is there a "service fee" of $200 for service on this $300 phone (including service plan and month of ST service)?
*edit I think I answered my own question, for the 1-2 year plan, the Service fee is probably $50 for the cracked screen plus $100 for anything (they don't explain, so I'll assume the costs are aggregate and that repair for this phone is tier 5), so $150 for a warranty repair. Please lmk if you see something to contradict this. So warranty not worth it, even though screen will likely crack on its own.
