Assuming we're not going to get $20 deal this year or deal with gift card. Might hold out for another week or two, but starting not too feel optimistic
After playing the H&R/Newegg pricing games for the past 3-4 years and waiting for a better deal to come this year, I finally gave up and went to FreeTaxUSA. Most likely will never go back to H&R.

FTUsa cost me $15 total for federal and state - and unlike H*R, there was no additional state e-file fees (my situation includes W2, stock sale, retirement, HSA's, etc.). Interface is just as intuitive as H&R or TurboTax.

Can Free Tax USA import brokerage transactions from E*Trade? Can't find it in their help files.

Which version do we need for filing if we also have an LLC?

I was using Premium, but last year used Deluxe with no issue until I went to e-file and it complained about the SEHID. So i had to paper file. Issue may not have been unique to Deluxe

I used to do the HRB before as well, but we have 2 LLCs (mine and my wife's). HRB said they supported all the forms I needed and then when I entered the second business, they basically said that I have to manually calculate my QBI (Qualified Business Income Deduction) for two businesses. Why are you telling me to compute something on a COMPUTER. Morons...

For that reason, I tried FTU (FreeTaxUSA) and was impressed. Not only did they do everything I needed without question, but it was just as easy as HRB... and cost FAR less.

Screw you HRB... FTU FTW!

IIRC, free taxusa does not work if you earn money in one state but live in another.

Ooh, looks like they addressed that change this year, it's no longer on the list of unsupported situations.

Items not supported

Foreign employment income (Form 2555)
Nonresident alien returns (Form 1040NR)
Customers or preparers living outside the United States when they file their taxes
At-risk limitations (Form 6198)
Credit for Small Employer Pension Plan Startup Costs (Form 8881)
Casualty or theft gain or loss for business and income producing property

I just went to the make an offer option for the individual programs. I offered New Egg $20 for Deluxe + State and New Egg accepted the offer. I may have been able to get it cheaper but was okay with paying $20 + tax.

Alright, stick with Block or try Free Tax USA?

Any product offering "free" makes me worry about privacy, someone is paying right? But seems like a lot of people like it and HR Block isn't exactly a saint among companies either.
They make money off state returns, upgraded support, etc. They don't sell your info (see here [freetaxusa.com]), which is prohibited by the IRS. They're a free file partners, so not some random site that IRS hasn't approved. They've been around 23 years. Block and Intuit have both had privacy leaks, but I'm not aware of any with FTUSA. I think the biggest concern for some people is using online software vs doing it locally on your PC.

The government made them offer free tax services for those in certain income brackets. Once the government takes away those free options you'll never see this at $20 again
Block & Intuit already left the free file alliance a few years ago. When they got in trouble for steering users away from the free options. There are other vendors that still participate and others that offer free-ish options for anyone.

what is with all the freetaxusa mentinoned here? are these sales people for ftaxusa? i dont see any other mentions like direct file, free file or any other tax software. Seems a bit fishy
Check with wiki post for other options - FreeTaxUSA has the largest marketshare of the alternatives i believe. Probably because it handles almost any individual tax situation and is available to any user without restrictions.

OLT, Cash App, Direct File are all good options too if they do what you need.
