Whole Foods bulk organic steel cuts are $1.99/lb in NYC stores.
With enough scale, we can make it work.

Newman, get the van.

Quick cooking is close to the opposite of steel cut.

What do you usually mix in it so it's not like eating wet cardboard
You might want to cook a little longer for the oat "milk" to develop. You can also toast them first for a Cheerios flavor. But the advantage of them being bland is you can add almost any fruit, nut, sugar, or syrup. Even eggs are good yummy

Do you really have to cook these for 7-8 hours? 😳... electricity/gas costs kills the deal 🤣

edited.... nevermind. I accidentally read the slow cooker instructions!

I mix mine with quinoa and cook in a rice cooker; quinoa is overly grainy to me, oatmeal too mushy, but mixed comes out with a texture similar to brown rice. Works for savory or sweet applications.

FYI you can get a 50lb bag of organic steel cut oats for $56 from Azure Standards (they typically deliver to a pick up site local to you) for around $1.12/lb
That looks great! I may give them a try! Thanks!

You can get a futures contract for oats on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for about $3.47 per bushel right now. That would of course be for 5,000 bushels, so about $17,350, not including fees and delivery by barge or rail in May, and then you'd need to have the 185,000 pounds of oats milled to your liking. But still, that's 9 cents per pound for the raw oats, which is a much better deal.

instant pot:
saute steel cut oats with butter for 5 minutes
add cinnamon, honey, raisins or cranberries, 2x water
cook high pressure for 5 minutes

I make a 4 cup batch which lasts me almost a whole week, just microwave to reheat.

Instant pot 20 minutes. No oil. Creamy. Almost yogurt-like.
