Ok. Just got my phone and found an H2O sim at a random small phone retailer. Unfortunately mine is "Locked Carrier: 2387 - US Verizon Locked Policy" on sickw, not flex policy. So the H2O sim didn't work. Guessing most or all phones nowadays won't be the flex policy version. My next step is to unlock with Verizon normally then cancel the plan. I will leave the phone in the box "in a drawer" for the next 60 days. I'll post any further updates as an edit to this post. My only slight worry is that cancelling today will affect my unlock, I'm only about 5% worried about that tho. Total cost so far is $3.~ tax, $99 device pay off, $10 gamble on H2O sim from a random store. Just expecting to add whatever 3 days of Verizon service is. Edit: Didn't realize the chat wasn't 24/7. Not able to cancel my service today without a rep. I'll have to go into Day 4 and pay the activation fee. I'll keep looking for a way for the next hour. Edit: I thought I'd be able to cancel from the chat, however the chat would not send me to a live person so I decided to call. Actually scheduled a call and they called me so I didn't have to sit around on hold. Weird I got an indian guy, so not sure why the hours aren't 24/7. He was really good tho, didn't have to fight him on anything. I did make sure to turn on a slight Karen/Kevin mode, and whatever reasons I gave for cancelling were, "The agreement says I can cancel within 30 days" and "I decided I don't want the service". The annoying thing is that the call cutoff as he canceled for me. I did have to "allow" the modification of my account from a notification on the myverizon app as he did it, so anyone doing this should turn those notifications on just in case. The service is definitely dead, myverizon is showing a $100+ bill due in a month, but assume it will update. Expecting an activation fee charge, 4 days of service, maybe something else. I'll update with the total.
Thank you for the updates! I have been reading through the May 2024 deal comments and plan to pull the trigger on this deal (looks like it is back in stock on Walmart website... hopefully that proves to be true...). Will be curious to hear about your bill and if it gets updated... activation charge kept/removed, full/prorated refund of service plan, etc.

Question about your sickw check: I had thought that once you paid off device, lock status would change from "Verizon" to "Flex." Looks like that is not true? Or it takes some time to propagate? Since it has been a couple days now since you paid off device, what does lock status show? The May 2024 deal comments seem to imply even with lock status "Verizon," after payoff, ATT unlock method worked (I think).

Question about ATT unlock method attempt: had you turned on your phone before inserting H2O sim, or only after inserting H2O sim?

Thanks again!

Sorry about the late reply. The sickw readout didn't change, it's still verizon locked policy, not flex. I believe it should come as a flex if you get one of those. I suspect it's a newer batch of phones, if you look thru the thread, its an earlier "estimated Purchase Date" on sickw, mine is 2024-12-07... relatively new phone. I feel like Apple must've sorted that out for Verizon.

So, I believe I was on day 4 (from purchase not activation) and it looks like the activation fee was kept on for me. I just received my verizon bill thru email and it came out to $59.34 ($112.51 -$53.17 = $59.34). So looks like it was definitely prorated. (I'm ok with paying this amount since I made the mistake) No breakdown on the numbers however, I assume it's activation fee, taxes, and the actual monthly fee. Looks like most of what I got back was the monthly fee and the rest gets charged on day 4. The payoff date doesn't seem to matter for the unlock policy from my POV, ideally add the CC info Day 1 and do your best to payoff ASAP. Make sure you can call within operation hours of Day 3 latest.

I 100% definitely put the H2O sim in before turning on the phone for the first time. The message I got was an apple message saying I couldn't use the sim. Don't have the exact phrasing unfortunately.

I believe the thread mentions this, but once you receive that email and connect it to the myverizon app, you should be able to check the imei from there and see if it's verizon unlock policy with it. One more thing, make sure you write down your account number before terminating your service, I don't know what that is so I will have to call tomorrow to make my final payment.

EDIT: Just got my paper bill in the mail with the account number. I had already called verizon and got my payment sorted out over the phone. They said there's usually a $10 processing fee over the phone but the guy waived it. But if you don't want to risk that you will most likely get the bill in the mail. This bill has the original $112 dollars for the first month, so I assume I'll get another bill with the amount I paid over the phone.

Doesn't the H2O SIM card only work in the AT&T phones and not Verizon? Genuine question, because that was what my impression had been from reading the threads before.

As far as I remember from the thread, it seems like there were two kinds of phones from Apple. One was "Flex Policy" and one was "US Verizon Locked Policy". I believe Flex Policy is a generic iPhone that gets locked to whatever carrier you activate under and US Verizon Locked Policy comes pre locked to Verizon. The people in the previous thread were mostly getting Flex policy around the beginning and Verizon Policy towards the end. To me it seemed like Apple wised up or Verizon asked Apple to make them pre locked, but both types of phones were from Verizon. It was a loophole really, I assume now if you get a phone from at&t, it'll automatically put you on their contract even with an H2O sim. Worth trying if you have one lying around tho, but I wouldn't go buy one

I had a 95% belief the H2O sim wouldn't work on my phone but I tried anyway for due diligence. As far as I remember, no one in the thread posted an update about how they did with a Verizon Policy phone. I assumed they might have even paid the Verizon plan for 2 months.

These are my final results for the phone:
$99 purchase + 3.xx tax + $10 H2O sim + $59.34 day 4 fee (activation/tax/prorate 1 day/other fees) = $173~
3 total bills in the mail, original price, price to terminate service, and one saying I owed $0.
Unlocked on May 19, phone was sitting on my shelf in airplane mode. Had to turn off airplane mode for it to take effect, and rebooted the phone maybe twice with my Mint Mobile sim for calls, data, and texts/imessage to kick in.

Totally worth it, phone works great, same chip as iPhone 13. Next time I would just do all the steps ASAP to avoid the extra day 4 fees.
