It'll serve you well, but buy a guitar that you can put on a stand and every time you walk past you want to pick it up. So so you like strats? If so, buy this. If not watch for the guitar you like to go on sale. These player IIs just came out last year. HSS strats are very flexible (hss means it's a humbucker in the bridge and there's 2 single coil pickups).

It would be pretty great for a beginner. Player IIs are pretty nice guitars all in all.

It's good enough for a professional musician actually, especially if you're not looking for an heirloom piece. Not much difference between this and the American Standard in meaningful ways except the hardware tbh. the Japanese Fender's have slightly better quality, but would be $300-400+ more then this (and the American Standards at about $600-700 more)

Thought these were pretty light with the chambered body?

I went and checked these out at a Guitar Center a little while ago. These Player IIs are fantastic guitars in general and even more so for beginners. The pickup configuration is pretty versatile and gives more tonal options than a straight single coil Strat. However the best part for beginners would likely be the comfortable neck. It has a smooth satiny finish which makes moving up and down the fretboard a breeze, as opposed to a glossy neck which could offer a bit more resistance moving up and down, especially if your hands get sweaty. Also the rolled edges are super comfortable, eliminating any discomfort from sharp frets that often plague non-rolled boards. Colors are always subjective, but I think this black on red is sexy as hell. You can't beat this price! It's a lot of guitar for the money.

On Sweetwater you can look up how much the one you are buying weighs-- I just checked a number of them and it looks like most of these Player II HSS strats weigh in at just under 7 pounds.

Anyone know how well they stay in tune using the trem? Not looking to dive bomb or anything but if it has a floating trem I'd like to be able to use it without retuning every song.

I have a player 1 series sss strat and it stays in tune well. I did tighten the springs in the tremelo so that it limits the ability to pull the strings tight, but can still dive. I dont even use the whammy bar so its no big deal. These are supposed be even better than the player 1 series and mine is great. Take your time and do a proper setup and it will be a guitar to last a lifetime

Unless you specifically want something that says Fender on the headstock, I would try to find something without a tremolo and with more modern specs (you can even find stainless steel frets and roasted maple at this price point). But the headstock is important too, people will buy brands that are not great value like Fender, Gibson or PRS because their old idols use them, and if that's what inspires you, then that's perfectly fine.
Ultimately, you want something that you want to pick up and that needs minimal maintenance, so you don't get discouraged as a beginner.

This guitar on sale is not chambered. Musician's Friend uses "chambered" in the description of the Player II models when they are chambered. The non-chambered Player II HSS alder-body strat models on Sweetwater right now are between 7lbs 12oz and 8lbs 6oz. That's more likely the weight of a guitar you would receive from this sale --- which, by the way, is an excellent price. (it's just not chambered)
