Bought an upgraded version (16g Ram / 512gb nvme)of this a few months ago. Works great as a personal server, within reason. Couple notes, it does have 2 nvme slots one being 2280 (standard), the other is a odd keyed 2242. Also only one ram slot.

Linux. I pulled the NVMe drive from this box and installed it to an external NVMe USB enclosure, and burned HAOS to it using Balena Etcher in Windows on my laptop. Reinstalled the NVMe drive in the GMKTec box and booted it up, found the DHCP IP address on my router, and then used the Web UI to finish configuration.

Does anyone have any experience using this type of device with pfsense? I am thinking of setting one up.
You'll need dual NICs, and this box only has a single NIC. I believe all the sub $200 GMKtec boxes with dual NICs use Realtek chipsets, while the "conventional wisdom" for pFsense is to use Intel NICs. That being said, answering your original question, I have not tried one for pFsense.

I do have a pFsense router, but it's purpose built, and I purchased a used Intel multi-NIC PCIe card from eBay - they are usually "pulls" from decomissioned corporate server hardware.

I have had the same thought as you and have been tempted to try a dual NIC GMKtec as a router, even if they are Realtek. My earliest pFsense router used dual Realtek NICs and worked ok IIRC, although at this point I have gigabit fiber to the house and that original pFsense box wouldn't route at gigabit speeds on my home network.

It would be easy enough to "audition" one of the GMKtec dual-NIC boxes with pFsense - use your own NVMe drive to install pFsense on, see how well it works, and if you decide to return, swap the original NVMe drive back in to send it back if it doesn't work out (presuming you have a 30 day Prime account return window).

I'm kinda fascinated with these GMKtec boxes and have the one in this deal running as a dedicated Home Assistant box, and it's great - I'm tempted to get a dual NIC version to experiment with. .

I believe the issue with Realtek NICs in a router is that they "offload" a lot of processing to the CPU, while the Intel NICs have onboard processing.

Bought this during the last sale to run as a headless Plex server. Works great so far.
Any issues transcoding a single stream up to 4k? Seems plenty capable but I haven't looked into the mini PC route much.

Good homelab potential. x86 for running Opnsense, Pfsense and Proxmox. Use a USB to ethernet for 2nd network adapter.

Anyone using these to serve up a media server 24/7? Does it run hot? Reliable?

Same, using this running HassOS directly on the hardware and was flawless install with plenty of horsepower.

Nope, seems to handle 4K transcoding just fine. I'm sure you can find more rigorous testing online, but I put on a 4K REMUX and transcoded it to 1080p and it was totally fine.

No monitor, keyboard or mouse. I thought that's what headless meant, apologies if I was wrong. I connected it directly to my router via ethernet, and remote in from another PC if I ever have to manage something. But otherwise it pretty much manages itself after set-up.

I just watched an ETA Prime video [youtube.com] showcasing a N150 Mini PC w/12GB LPDDR5 RAM & 512G SSD for $149 after coupon (ASIN B0DT48SHWD) that might be better than this as it features a full USB-C port for single cable solution. Thoughts?

Will this run a few games from steam. Specifically, Real Flight Simulator 9 onwards. I want to run that on the larger tv screen, and may be watch a movie or two.

I'd be tempted to use this one as a router, actually. The 2x 2.5 Gb interfaces are apparently i226v. The only major downsides are the soldered RAM and short m.2 2242 (?) slot, but neither should be a deal-breaker for this use case.
