For all the people who own a MBA M1 or later model. In case you are in the camp of people who are using your laptops just for internet/email/youtube/office save your money and don't upgrade. I just got my MBA M4 16/512 and feel zero difference in regards of speed compared to my MBA M1 8/256.
I actually liked the more compact design of my M1. Also the M4 seems to burn much faster through the battery charge compared to my M1 which is at 84% battery capacity. It is too much haste to return it and I also promised my wife the M1 so I am going to keep the M4. But if you have M1, M2 or M3 juts wait until there is a revolutionary new generation. But if you are coming from PC or older MBA definitely go for the M4 especially if you can get one this cheap

I strongly disagree with you.

I had a MBA M1 and moved over to the MBA M4 and extremely pleased. It is noticeably faster. The M4 has a much better webcam versus the 10+ year old 720p camera in the M1. M4 keyboard is better. M4 fingerprint sensor is better.

I don't know what you mean with faster. As I switched from my intel MBA to MBA M1 that was absolutely faster. It was like switching from a Toyota Prius to a Ferrari. The speed everything was opening and the way you could scroll through things was mind boggling. Now that I am used to the M1 speed, switching from M1 to M4 felt like I am using the exact the same computer. Unless you are doing highly complex video editing and processor heavy tasks (what I think majority of the people here does not do) web surfing speed and opening things on the computer is exact same felt speed. Maybe when you time it with a microsecond watch you will see a tiny difference but I promise you, I don't feel that difference.
Also the better keyboard thing is very minor. Fingerprint sensor is different, but better??
The only thing which you are right is the webcam but I never use that.
I still have not setup my M1 for my wife so when the battery of the M4 is empty, I switch the M1 and as I mentioned before, it feels more compact and the battery seems to last longer.
Again, it is a different story when you do more than basic stuff but I think for 90% of people that is not the case here.

BTW: I think the ssd off the 256 M1 is faster than the one of M4. I have the 512 M4 and the black magic test says the ssd is supposed to be faster but even there I don't feel a difference.

Regarding RAM, I generally believe that more is preferable, although 8GB has consistently been sufficient for casual internet browsing and office work. I only say this because through the years I have gone back and forth between 8 and 16gb machines.

I had that too and thought, what the heck, I want the newest and shiniest. But I really regret having spent the extra dollars. Even the upgraded 512gb with my M4 I didn't need. My MBA is just for internet surfing and emails and 256 was more than enough. For my purposes the M1 was a better computer. Felt more portable and had longer battery life. BTW I have been fighting this fight to upgrade since the M3 came out but I already knew it will be waste of money. All these shiny paid YouTube Videos who tell you to upgrade from M1 to M4 are BS. Is the same with IPhones. When you have an IPhone 8, yes it makes sense to switch to IPhone 16 but if you have an IPhone 13 or 14 makes zero sense to go to 16 unless you really really want the small changes which majority of people will never use.

the more you wait, the value of m1 keeps going down.

What about upgrading from a 2018 1.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 w/ 8GB.
