Obviously this works with more than just Macs. PC's with Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 can take advantage of the 40Gbps. I would only put an NVMe drive in this enclosure that is known for running cool such Samsung 990 EVO Plus and such.

Unfortunately I never got the advertised speed with Wavlink Thunderbolt 3 externals, not sure if I should try 4.

How would this compare to something like this? https://www.amazon.com/OWC-Portab...QPCVP?th=1

It's probably because these are not truly thunderbolt enclosures. They use USB 4.0 which depending on the specific port on your laptop can be 20gbps or 40gbps (many laptops tend to use the slower speed ports). Also your drive has to be just as fast

Theoretically they should perform the same because they have the same controller but with external enclosures you also have to consider heat dissipation. The biggest obstacle with TB4 enclosures is keeping the drive cool enough that the drive won't thermal throttle. The enclosure you listed is one of the best at heat dissipation while this Wavlink is only recommended for drives that are known to run cool. The OWC cost $50 more but it has a two year warranty. You decide. I'm going to try this Wavlink paired with a 4tb Samsung 990 EVO Plus. I also purchase a 3 year warranty for $10.

Adding further to what lightsdsd is saying: you're going to be OK if you dont need to run your drive at max speed for sustained periods. You'll get very fast transfers for short periods, but as soon as the drive gets hot, it's going to throttle speeds to protect itself. If you need to xfer 500gb or do some advanced video editing of large files, the drive will not be able to run at max capacity. The drive you listed is much more capable at keeping the drive cool, and thus keeping speeds higher for longer periods of time.

$60 more ($120) than this deal, or exactly twice the price.

I'm using this [a.co] on my Mac Mini M4 (as a 2TB primary drive, ignoring the internal 256GB), and while not reaching peak speeds (getting about 2700/2400 read/write), i'm getting good PCIe Gen3 speeds from it (which I've not seen a TB4 enclosure go over 3500 read yet). For $40 (on sale) it's been good.

I just bought this "Raidon UBOX-B4BP+" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZRTMGH7 for $69

It looks interesting, may run cool, and has a second USB-C port for external power if needed.

All the asm2464PD enclosures I've seen have fans. I even tried to run one of mine with the fan unplugged and then it kept disconnecting under load. Apparently this one lacks a fan using that chipset so I question how reliable it'll be.

If your speeds are lower than expected, there's a good chance you need to enable performance option (the one that requires the safely remove being manually triggered) instead of quick disconnect (which disables caching entirely). I've seen that sometimes boost especially write speed by like 5x fold.
