Bought one of these previously. They are a blast. N64 support is hit or miss, but PS1 and below play great.

You will want to have a new actual branded SD card, and load with ArkOS. Instructions here: https://joeysretrohandhelds.com/g...tup-guide/

I got this for my 4 year old. He loves playing platformers, so I loaded it up with some classics plus Pico 8. I don't have to worry about microtransactions or him seeing something sketchy on YouTube, but I also don't have to sit right there watching his every move.

There are lots of options out there, but at this price point this is one of the more powerful cheap devices. To get something better you're looking at 60-75$.

This is a pretty solid and fast synopsis of a variety of options. 20 devices, 1 minute per device.

https://youtu.be/0fcwk_9Dqdc?si=6eSOb3m5yI9jGTs-

Basically, any device will handle PS1 and below fine, and they're quite affordable.

Then, for quite a bit more money you can add some GameCube and PS2.

Then, for even more money, you can add very strong GameCube and PS2 performance, and some Switch.

Retrocatalog.com is a good resource for basic stats like you were hoping for.

I know this is dirt cheap, so forgive me the silly questions:
No video output, right?
Do they make devices like this that double as a battery bank (i.e. provide power output from their USB-C port)? I mean, magsafe would be gravy
EDIT: of course they do LMAO I am sure they fail to excel at either use, but seems like a fun way to justify the purchase.

Anyway, thanks OP!

This or r36s?
I never tried this powkiddy but i got the r36s and it was technically fine, but ergonomically super uncomfortable. I'm a 5"10 male, and the vertical form factor just doesn't work for people my size anymore. Also the buttons and dpad are SO stick and feel like a cheap toy. I gave that one away and just paid a little bit more for something much nicer ($100 retroid pocket 2s).

Just given this is a horizontal form factor I'd give this a shot for this price. Idk the specs but I bet they have the same hardware power (most PS1 and some N64).

Just a PSA. This handheld, and most of the cheap non android ones, require USB A to USB C cables. They won't charge with any high wattage USB C only chargers. There are anecdotes on reddit of people frying theirs even using USB A cables if the wattage is too high. The consensus is use a old school 5v 1.5A charger. The only non android ones I know of which will charge with anything are the Miyoo Mini v4 and the Magic x mini zero 28.

Not really. This has an RK3266 whereas N64 capable are 3566/A133 at $50-60 such as the X55 or TrimUI Smart Pro, and that's before sale. With sale it comes down to under $40 for TSP and under $50 for X55.

X55 can handle basically all N64 and stream from PC with 6ms latency using Sunshine and GammaOS

Depends what you want to emulate. N64/PSP/Dreamcast run a little better on the RG35xxH.

For those interested in buying a retro handhelds, Aliexpress will be having a 15th anniversary sale starting on the 17th. You will find good deals on any number of retro handhelds at that time.

For something similar in this price range, I'd recommend the Anbernic brand over Powkiddy.
When I try to find review of these units just want to find out which one is good for what and comfort of buttons and battery life, I fall into a rabbit hole of unnecessarily long YouTube videos, article thst clearly biased for one against other, it simply fake stuff. Why isn't there a simple comparison table and with ratings of how well they emulate which platform and which one is best for what platform etc...
Is it because they keep changing model numbers and people can't keep up?

3DS is still Best emulation for Nintendo stuff but obviously if you need PS or n64 you will need better hardware.

R36s was my first retro handheld and it was ok. Just felt really cheap overall though and I didn't like the vertical form factor.

Never used powkiddy so I can't really compare.

For just a little more money though, the anbernic rg xx line is better. I got the rg35xx-h and I'm happy with that. This powkiddy looks very similar to it.

is this ideal for introducing a kid to video games? I'd like to introduce them the classics and slowly let them get into the newer stuff.
I know the price jump is pretty large but I'd toss the Steam Deck into your suggestion box. You can load those classics onto it and then move them to a decent amount of modern games all on the same device.

But this is a good price and is very portable.

thanks. I do have a steamdeck but it's quite heavy for a 5 year old to hold. (and I don't trust them with a 600 dollar device either lol)

I swore against buying another low budget Chinese handheld since I already own 3x w/in the past 2 years, although I might reconsider this PowKiddy one, but w/ an RK3566 its performance above the Allwinner H700 is negligible at best.
