Got mine last year and yes. It's been collecting dust. But in some circumstances, it's good to have
I have the X3 for 3+ years already.
I mainly use it when I go on vacation trips. I think it's totally worth it even tho I only used it about 4 trips.

The best thing about it is that you can just leave it on 360 view recording while you do activities and then go back to the video and edit/clip the moments. Like for conventional recorders, you need to point/manually focus the attention to the action and hope to capture all of it but with the 360cam, it just records everything around it. So it basically captures all those action moment in the 360cam without you needing to personally look for it during recording.

Highly recommend using the pc software for better range of mouse and keyboard editing. tho the phone app is not bad but I'm just more comfortable with pc setup.

Accessories I recommend you getting:
- Get the 2 or 3 extra battery. This enable you to have near full day uptime on recording without worrying to recharge. There's a bundle pack that comes with like a 1 or more batteries + charge station

- Get one or more 1tb micro sd card. I got one that I almost fill up on my 7 day vacation. I was nearly recording every moment.

- Get the official insta extendable selfie stick that can turn to tripod option on the handle portion. It's great to have when you want to leave it at place and keep recording while you do things and don't need to hold on to it.

- Get the waterproof case if you plan to go into deepwater (more than 10m). It was great for me when I went snorkeling underwater and during whale shark tour in Philippines.

optional:
- The audio is pretty good on the camera but the sound capture will origin from where the camera is located. So incase you want to capture clear audio from like a interview setting, you want to get that insta audio adapter that can plug in external mic. Then I recommend to get the wireless Dji mics

- There's those floating extendable selfie stick for water activities or just get the Camera Wrist Strap, Adjustable Nylon Hand Wrist Straps Lanyard with a 1/4" screw to attach it to that original selfies stick it comes with.

- There's those typical camera mounts packs, like to backpack, head mount, chest mount etc if you want hands off but the selfie stick is still the best route due to the ability the camera can make the selfie stick turn invisible in the recordings.

It does cost quite a bit. Think around $600~, after all the extra accessories I bought. But I think it's worth it because all the precise moment it captures without me needing to worry about focusing the camera/attention at x times. It just let me turn it on and record 360 and then later edit the videos to find/clip the moments it capture.

I wish I have the X4 because it came out like 1 year after I bought my X3. The X3 is only 4K max on the 360 but the X4 can do 8K. The video resolution is so good that you can make still frames and use it as camera shot. It's still has crisp and clear due to the 4K for my X3. But with the X4, it can do even better, at 8K.
Anyone recommend? Heard it's niche and many people don't use it as often. Thoughts?

What kind of computer you need to playback the 8K videos in their native resolution?

I bought this bundle from costco back in october or so for $430.

I was planning to use it for ski trips and sporting events. It doesnt get used but thats my fault, not the cameras. Its awesome and the editing tools are relatively noob friendly. If you want 360 video and a platform to edit it, this is the one. If you just want an action cam there are much more cost effective and easier to use options

Sams has the X3 bundle for $350. This sounds like a better deal, but the editing and over heating part sounds worrisome

You have to force yourself to think through shots, and you need to have a pretty decent editing rig to work with the footage. But the shots you can get are incredible.

Same. I got it so that I might actually be in some family photos/videos. And it does work for that, as a sort of third-person photographer.

But even with the pretty well-done editing software, I find it to be a PAIN to actually turn out the videos.

You must edit the videos and export them - even without editing the exporting part is a bother to me. Technically you can set the camera to use single-camera mode or I think set it to automatically focus on you…but yeah there's a good deal of thinking and editing/production involved compared to whipping out a phone or GoPro, capturing a short scene, and sharing it to the family album.

I anticipate that these will finally become popular for casual users in couple years or so, when AI is good enough to make good-enough editing choices without user involvement.

For $50 more I'd go with this. Having 8k is kind of a big deal when you're almost always cropping way down from the 360° starting image.

It's not the playback that's the issue, it's the editing. And you can do that on a phone, although not the absolute highest quality.

And it's rare you'd actually want that full 8k image - that's 8k stretched over a 360° sphere. Almost always you'll be cropping in pretty far to 2kish or 1080p.

No, they have a 2 year cycle and this came out 1 year ago. It also previously went on sale.

As others have said, if you plan out your shots and have a good scene for it, the shots are incredible. In the snow, I've held the camera off my right shoulder for a 3rd person perspective - like a video game (SSX) or just shot stills which looks amazing. I've blended video to regular 2D clips and the pole allows me to do a shot where I'm pulling or pushing though a very small space which looks like an impossible shot since a camera shouldn't have been able to fit through.

It's the planning and the editing that reduces its use. I have an X3 and still think it's good enough for my occasional use, but the X4 has a larger screen which would make navigation easier, so I['m on the fence.

One other thing you can do without any editing is to pull the full 360 video file and load it into your Quest, so you can view it in full 360 which is pretty nice.

Nice thing to have, you won't regret it, especially with a 360 VR headset, it feels like getting back in time.

I have a GoPro Max (5yrs old) and I use it primarily for snowboarding. The cool thing about 360 cameras is that you don't have to 'frame' your shots... you just let it record then reframe in post production (much easier with both vendors software which has AI subject tracking instead of keyframes).

For the past 5yrs, I've been running dual cameras (360 for panning and GoPro8/11 for the epic 'vista' shots), the X4's dual 4K lenses are robust enough to capture those epic shots in full 4K - enough where I intend to sell off my GoPro cameras and goto ONE camera for everything.

Is it a niche camera? Yes
Is it flexible and powerful enough for double duty as a primary action cam? Yes
Does the camera and selfie stick look pretty dorky? ...yes...

Google the X4 videos on YouTube and see if 360 is right for you.

The 20% off is a super compelling reason to switch

To be more precise, the 8k isn't 'stretched' - it's TWO separate true 4K lenses that are recording onto the same file (and you might see the 'stitch' line in the final image)
