The 500 set is 23.6 cm3 of magnets whereas the 259 pieces is only 16.72 cm3. I had Claude.ai do the math for me.

To determine which deal offers better value, we can compare the total volume of the magnets in each set. This will give us a rough estimate of the amount of magnetic material you're getting. Here's the volume of each magnet, calculated as π×r2×h\pi \times r^2 \times h, where rr is the radius and hh is the height:
259-piece Set

100 pcs 3x1mm: π×(1.52)×1×100=706.86 mm3\pi \times (1.5^2) \times 1 \times 100 = 706.86 \, \text{mm}^3
54 pcs 5x1mm: π×(2.52)×1×54=1,062.52 mm3\pi \times (2.5^2) \times 1 \times 54 = 1,062.52 \, \text{mm}^3
40 pcs 6x2mm: π×(32)×2×40=2,261.95 mm3\pi \times (3^2) \times 2 \times 40 = 2,261.95 \, \text{mm}^3
30 pcs 8x2mm: π×(42)×2×30=3,015.93 mm3\pi \times (4^2) \times 2 \times 30 = 3,015.93 \, \text{mm}^3
20 pcs 10x2mm: π×(52)×2×20=3,141.59 mm3\pi \times (5^2) \times 2 \times 20 = 3,141.59 \, \text{mm}^3
10 pcs 12x3mm: π×(62)×3×10=3,393.80 mm3\pi \times (6^2) \times 3 \times 10 = 3,393.80 \, \text{mm}^3
5 pcs 20x2mm: π×(102)×2×5=3,141.59 mm3\pi \times (10^2) \times 2 \times 5 = 3,141.59 \, \text{mm}^3
Total Volume for 259-piece Set:

706.86+1,062.52+2,261.95+3,015.93+3,141.59+3,393.80+3,141.59=16,724.24 mm3706.86 + 1,062.52 + 2,261.95 + 3,015.93 + 3,141.59 + 3,393.80 + 3,141.59 = 16,724.24 \, \text{mm}^3
500-piece Set

100 pcs 8x2mm: π×(42)×2×100=10,053.10 mm3\pi \times (4^2) \times 2 \times 100 = 10,053.10 \, \text{mm}^3
100 pcs 6x2mm: π×(32)×2×100=5,654.87 mm3\pi \times (3^2) \times 2 \times 100 = 5,654.87 \, \text{mm}^3
100 pcs 5x2mm: π×(2.52)×2×100=3,926.99 mm3\pi \times (2.5^2) \times 2 \times 100 = 3,926.99 \, \text{mm}^3
100 pcs 4x2mm: π×(22)×2×100=2,513.27 mm3\pi \times (2^2) \times 2 \times 100 = 2,513.27 \, \text{mm}^3
100 pcs 3x2mm: π×(1.52)×2×100=1,413.72 mm3\pi \times (1.5^2) \times 2 \times 100 = 1,413.72 \, \text{mm}^3
Total Volume for 500-piece Set:

10,053.10+5,654.87+3,926.99+2,513.27+1,413.72=23,561.95 mm310,053.10 + 5,654.87 + 3,926.99 + 2,513.27 + 1,413.72 = 23,561.95 \, \text{mm}^3
Conclusion

The 500-piece set provides a greater total volume of magnetic material (23,561.95 mm³) compared to the 259-piece set (16,724.24 mm³). Thus, the 500-piece set offers a better deal in terms of the amount of magnetic material you're getting.

I worked in a casino and had a incompetent supervisor, who was also as asshat. On days I was stuck with him watching over me, I would take one of these magnets and stick it under one of those tiny circular band-aids and put it on one of my fingers. I made sure that finger would touch the magnetic strip on the back of the Player's Card. It was glorious to hear his mumbled curses as he had to enter all the details manually. He typed with two fingers. 🤣

Edit: to those who confusing a 'Players Card' with a charge card. A Player's Card is issued by the casino, it's like a Loyalty Card at the grocery store. It allows the casino to track your play and the money in exchange for free/discounts rooms, food and shows. After entering the information manually, he simply pushes a button and prints out another. So fun for me, aggravation for Asshat, and oblivion to the player as they never knew anything happened.

Guessing these are probably lower on the rating scale since it isn't mentioned.

Neodymium magnets range from N35 to N55 in grade. The higher the grade, or N number, the incrementally stronger the magnet will be.

The grades of neodymium magnets are measured in Tesla metrics or units of Gauss Oersted (MGOe).

Ah, magnets.
If you're around old people, you can totally mess up their CRT TVs and spinning disk hard drives.
You can use these to detect high levels of magnesium/zinc in wild caught fish. But not nickel. Stupid physics.
Zapping them with a high amount of voltage turns them into paperweights.
Depending on the fridge or the location on the fridge, you can use these to hold up the award your kid brought home from school without leaving tape residue.
Unfortunately, sticking them to the bottom of motorcycles does not help trip traffic lights. If they did, manufacturers would include them out of the factory.
So, there is 5 uses. And you still have 252 more magnets to spare.

Pepperidge Farms remembers when you could cheat the electric and gas company with magnets.

They're also nice to check if you have lead pipes in your house.

Yep, and it had 2 sizes I need for some projects too. The other kit only has one and otherwise looks less useful to me.
