Sweet! The only thing better than a prize in the bottom of a box of Cap'n Crunch is finding a souvenir in a bag of mulch. Who knows: maybe there's even a winning lottery ticket in there somewhere. I'll buy some bags and report back later.
I just went through 12 bags of the Lowes mulch that's on sale for $2 per bag, and what a disappointment. I did find a few large chunks, but there was no trash, plastic, nails, rubber, extension cords, and--most importantly of all--no winning (or even losing) lottery tickets: it was ALL MULCH! The nerve! The only thing that could make today worse is if I were to find out that Cap'n Crunch isn't really a naval officer.

Dont forget you can instacart mulch. Last year i had my mulch delivered and got it at the store price. I think i was allowed 30 bags a delivery. Delivery fee was normal and i did tip cash $25. The drivers were very nice. PS i never found anything in my mulch other then mulch.

It showed up in their ad preview and then was gone the day the actual sale started.

Current best mulch deal is Menard's:

Followed by Walmart:

It's all sourced locally, so ymmv. I've never had an issue either, but these comments pop up almost every time this deal hits, so some region must have serious QA issues.
I believe a standard pallet typically holds 65-70 average-sized bags of mulch. On two separate occasions, I purchased a pallet and encountered the same issue, ultimately returning half of the pallet each time. This has just been my personal experience, so I'm glad to hear you haven't faced the same problem. I'm located in the Charlotte, NC area.

I am looking for wood chips instead of mulch for avocado trees.

Like someone else suggested Chip Drop can be great but just to warned they'll bring you whatever amount (and condition) that random arborist has...sometimes with no notice. Could be 5 'yards' of the highest quality brand new cedar chips freshly chipped that day or a massive dump truck of decomposed piles of wood-ish organic matter full of mold, termites, mixed with old scrap wood, man-made debris, etc. (I've gotten both extremes on more than one occasion). Also, they'll just dump run and assuming the location is accessible, if not accessible they'll just drop it somewhere else Wink . Afterwards you are sometimes left with a huge mess in the wrong spot even if you clearly described and marked the proper dump spot.

Chip Drop is great just temper your expectations if you've never used them before.

Never has that problem. I buy 20+ bags every year.

Ive never had these dramatic problems others face with the lowes mulch either. Every year its stories about finding logs, plastic, severed body parts or whatver. I buy 90 bags a year and its fine. Is it perfect, no. Is it gonna rot anyway because its discarded wood, yes. Its a disposable commdity that serves a short term purpose. No point in spending on gucci brands.

Lowe's premium mulch feels like a souvenir grab bag—you never know what you might find. Trash, plastic, nails, rubber, extension cords, large chunks of wood—it's all in there.
That's pretty much the case with most budget shredded hardwood mulches from box stores, and especially common with colored mulches, since it provides a certain amount of concealment. Using old pallets for material will do that.

Interesting. I hadn't heard of pallets or artificial materials in chipdrops, but I don't doubt your experience. On a side note, termites are generally good, because they help the mulch break down and feed the soil.

Termites aren't bad for that sake I just have fear of them being within 30-50' of the house (arbitrary distances I know). Regarding the pallets and pieces of scrap wood; it was layered (not mixed) with fresh chipped wood so may have been on the truck already or something else they cleaned up on the same job site. The load was like 50/50 between fantastic and stuff I didn't even want to use anywhere near where I might mow because I feared nails and such. I didn't pay for it so can't complain too much.
