The Plex app itself has TV shows and movies (some free, some paid) built in now. Back in the day it didn't; they've mimicked Roku a bit on that front.

Originally it was just for being able to stream your media files from your PC to your TVs in your house, without having to hook the TV up to your PC. DLNA was the popular method back then, which Plex supports really well.

But Plex then added actual apps for android, iOS, etc and now you can sign into your account and access your Plex content from your PC anywhere in the world (assuming you port forwarded 32400 iirc by default).

They've added what some would call bloat, but others call features. Plex is now great for sharing with friends and family, they can create their own free Plex account and you can invite them to have access to specific libraries within your Plex server (you choose what they can watch, or you can choose All access).

Overseer is a popular app which hooks into Plex user login, so people who have access to your media can then log into your Overseer too, in order to find and request new media you may not have yet. *arrs is extremely common in this space but I won't dive into that.

As a lifetime member already I'm not unhappy to see the increase. More money coming in means sustainability and more development.
