This player holds its value well for a reason: With any of the consoles, it won't play Dolby vision blurays in Dolby vision even if the TV supports it, it'll fall back to generic HDR. This player works properly for that. It's complete bogus as Xbox at least supports Dolby vision for streaming and games, but it's a different "profile" or something. And for putting a blue ray drive into a PC, it's only good for ripping bluerays for Plex, windows can't play them natively unlike DVDs, you have to use cyberpowerdvd or something because of the DRM and those programs are just laughably buggy these days. I believe the DRM also only works on Intel processors up to 10th or 11th gen and anything beyond that you'd have to rip the blue rays into mkvs, and that's fine for folks who are technologically savvy and maybe already into the homelab scene, but not everyone is willing to do that

This is hilarious. People who don't own a high end AV system will already ignore this. Your comments are not as useful as you think it is.

If by some miracle this ever hits $300 I would like to pick up a couple more of these. It's probably the best higher end reasonably priced 4k player that will ever be manufactured again unfortunately.

I use the BenQ HT3550 projector. It doesn't specifically mention Dolby Vision in the specs. Does the projector have to specifically call out Dolby Vision to display DV from this player or it only matters that the player is outputting DV?

Is this worth upgrading from a UB420? I have an LG OLED

Just chiming in to say I've had mine for about 6 months now and love it! I don't notice any subtle noises that apparently this player has but then again I have it sitting across the room in an entertainment cabinet. No issues to report. Works perfectly. Displays nicely.

For anyone on the fence or wants to know if there is a difference between console and this, take 12 minutes to watch this breakdown: https://youtu.be/na1hqx4Yi68?si=8l3L3D2UAtflM-D6

I've gone through 5 of this exact players. From all the freezing, crashing, won't turn on or off, audio problems, DV problems, I finally gave up.

I own a mid grade AV system and have absolutely 0 use for blu ray player. I can download anything I want and plug it into via USB. Or straight from my computer to receiver via HDMI. Or create a media server for it all on my network. There's no drop in quality. I can absolutely run a 2.5hr 25gb movie 4k all the bells and whistles Dolby almost yadda yadda using any of that. Oo and sure a console blue ray lacks some of the high end features.. but you know what doesn't... The video file I can just get from anywhereeeeee. I can play a 4k hdr10+ Dolby atmos 7.1 movie without a single physical disk coming near me..
By download you mean steal. Gotcha.

- I just got a new ub820 on ebay for $300 last week, so you can get them cheaper if you keep an eye out. It was listed used like new, but did not appear to have been opened.
- I also have a 30TB nas with 2000 or so movies about 500 of which are 5GB 4k yts rips. But I also like have some of my favs on physical 4k UHD to play on the projector. You can do both stream, local plex / kodi and physical it doesn't have to be one or the other.
- $300 is not a big price to pay after spending $5k or more on a entry level home theatre setup.
- I was watching a wolfman yts last week and the blacks were terrible in all the dark scenes and was worried about the projector, then I played a 4k UHD movie and realized the contrast and blacks is just a problem with the compressed rips.
- Even with a 30TB nas that would only store about 500 4K UDH movies or so in full 50 to 100 GB size. There is a huge difference with the 5GB 4k yts rips and the 60GB 4k UDH disc.

I was holding for this to be $350 but with tarrifs kicking in I don't want to wait for the price increase. The surround sound on my 4k's is a huge upgrade from streaming.

Yikes hopefully the buffoons have moved on. They were basically sounding like criticizing anyone for drinking craft beer, vs cheap ass ice beer.

Mine starting having sound droputs
No sure if it was the set up yet...I moved in into another room and need to test it further

I updated to the most recent firmware and there was 3-4 second sound drop out with the Sony A95L and Arcam AV41 connected...two separate HDMI connections from the UB820
Surprisingly connected the $99 refurb LG UBK90 and everything was fine..LOL

Anyway, the Panasonic UB820 is now connected to a Pioneer LX805 and Hisense U8H ...through the Pioneer AVR with one HDMi cable
Btw there was a whole slew of especially Disney releases that had something about their Atmos encoding that caused audio dropouts. It was either the higher than typical bitrate of the Atmos track, the frequent/heavy use of seamless branching, or both. Having the player decode it and pass multichannel 7.1 PCM to the receiver, got rid of the skipping but of course you would lose the Atmos object layer that was supplementing TrueHD track. Interesting enough this issue was also exhibited with software using the ffmpeg, and the same workaround, even. It was resolved like some point a little over a year ago. A recent firmware update for this player also resolved this issue for me best I can tell.

How recently did you try to update?

I'll just toss this in here: The UB450 is the better choice for most people and it's $120 cheaper.
The 820 has some better upscaling tech and an "HDR optimizer". However, both of these features are mostly useless since many decent quality TVs made in the last few years come with better upscalers built in and don't need the "HDR optimizer". The 820 was built for the TVs of the mid-2010s and not the TVs of today.
The video tech in the 820 is 8 years old now. The reason the 820 is the suggested default for 4K players is that the 450 was not available in the USA until last year, so if you wanted Panasonic and Dolby Vision it was the only choice.
However, as of right now, the UB450 is mostly out of stock everywhere. If you're lucky you can find a Walmart B&M with one still on the shelf. If you're looking to upgrade to a Dolby Vision capable device over something like a PS5, I would wait until the UB450 comes back in stock. I picked mine up off the shelf a few months ago from walmart for ~$180.

I checked and I was on version 1.85..if I recall correctly on the number
Not sure when it was updated ...but I did check when I was having the dropouts and it stated I had the latest version on the update screen

The 4K disc ,Nosferatu, gave this player fits with dropouts
Additionally, my Sony UBP-8000 and X1000ESs players would not even play the disc and yes the disc was clean... In fact it was a brand new disc

The $99 refurb LG UBK90 player was popped in and it played the disc like a champ..LOL

When you buy into marketing.

Blu-Ray is a pixel perfect format. All these "high end" devices are doing is modifying source content.
Then you snag an old player like the LG UBK90 that doesnt have any built in picture processing/tone mapping
