For those paranoid about privacy: the OEM is located in China, thus must comply with the national security law there. This means that they must hand over your data upon the request of Chinese government. I know most of us are just small fish. But if you really care about privacy, you may want to learn about this. That being said, the hardware looks good and you can potentially install open source software instead of the oem's OS.

What I learned from the product reviews is that people who received the product for free from Amazon Vine are big fans.

I'm a Viner and my reviews are impartial, regardless of getting it "for free". I love my DXP4800 Plus.

This is a good NAS. I bought the DXP 4800 Plus and use this mainly as a PLEX server to stream 4k content and loseless audio.

The native OS has been improving over the last few months, and as others have mentioned, you have the option to install TruNAS.

On sale, I would recommend purchasing this if you plan to stream 4k content and need a good back up storage system for home use.

They are good enough for what their target customers need - above average tech savvy consumers and small businesses. Neither group really need 2.5G, high res/bitrate transcoding, nor run 20 instances of VM's.
Their software is great, hardware spec is just okay, security and service is decent compared to QNAP. I don't really know how Asus or Terramaster is, and Buffalo or WD users seem rather not very vocal...
a friends said UGreen (he was a backer) was buggy AF, and mentioned service is subpar - but supposedly both are better now but not at Synology or even QNAP level.
Also, I dunno how many looking for 2 bay NAS on sale would really spend money on 2.5GbE switch and NIC's or run enough dockers to need 8GB of RAM?

Synology's hardware is well below "just OK". It's actually startlingly terrible. Their unreleased 2025 models are using 5+ year old SoCs. They have 1 gig ethernet, and even the 2025 models are just getting 2.5gbe. Everyone else is on one or more 10gig ports. Synology doesn't even have a single product with a non celeron Intel chip for quicksync. If you want to use plex, there is literally not a good Synology product.

Synology has refused to upgrade their cpus for who knows why. They should be on sale but arent. I got one of these in December and i still haven't bought hard drives for it because they've been so expensive. They all seem to take ssds though so i might just start there and migrate when drives get cheaper.
Check out serverpartdeals- I just picked up a WD Ultrastar HC510 10tb for $120 including shipping and tax.

for the forum readers sake, i'm going to reply on clarify some issues about why you consider Synology hardware to be terrible...
  • 5+ year old J series celeron is perfectly capable if you are just doing regular NAS things. People with older raspberry pi's do far more with much less of a processor.
  • 2.5GBE switches or NIC's are almost exclusively corporate realm. May be there are some small business content creators checking bargains on SD... Most of us don't need them.
  • 10 GIG ports non SFP are even more scarce - most entry level NAS makers mentioned don't put 10G ports. People dealing with those are IT professionals. They don't mind burning company dollars - They don't come to SD to find deals on company purchases. Maybe very few people running higher end homelab as hobby, but they probably are savvy enough to know what hardware to run...
  • For serving Plex at home, there is absolutely no need for transcoding. Gigabit lines and wifi is fine for sending 4K video to other rooms at home without transcoding.
  • I agree partially on Plex usage on Synology being terrible. Partially - Synology is terrible for someone serving 4K vids for multiple simultaneous mobile users from offsite (1080p's don't transcoding that nowadays, even on LTE), assuming the Plex Pass was paid for to support mobile devices and transcoding, but this person won't pay for (or can't get) decent enough internet to get 100+ Mbps uploads OR also won't pay for a simple cheap homeserver (but would rather rely on the NAS). For those people, they can reference this handy chart (a big long in the tooth) and see what they can buy to stay away from Synology

LOL not a knock off. Specs & build quality blow Snology out of the water.
Agreed. I've had this for a couple months and absolutely love it. For the things I care about, it's suited my needs way better than the Synology I tried a couple years ago.

Umm I picked up a 8 port 2.5g switch with 1 10g port with V lan for $45 dollars over the winter. If something does not cost much more it's foolish not to try and future prof.

You have to understand that the legal system and legal practice are very different there than the West. They can search you without a warrant or just rubber-stamp a warrant. For example, if you use WeChat, your chat isn't end to end encrypted, and can be automatically flagged for any content they don't like (including non China accounts). They can also access your chat without warrant, just use the legally built backdoor. Here in the US, a warrant is a must. Plus, end to end encryption is almost universal in chat apps. Citizen Lab in University of Toronto has a series of studies on the privacy side of WeChat, if anyone is curious.
years ago i started using wechat innocently enough (as one of, not primary) to avoid the privacy concerns of having to use whatsapp (during the time FB acquired it)... the past 5 yrs, i regret even having sent the data i did through wechat (some social activity /photos) and having registered my phone # w/ them (wechat).

Now, we need a deal on hard drives.

Exactly, I bought 4x WD 8TB Reds but they were so loud and slow, I returned them and got SSD drives. Now it's whisper quiet and fast!

I have a QNAP NAS right now and I don't like the software, I also have a n100 based pc that runs a proxmox ve. If i was buying again right now, I would get a 4 or 8 bay version of this.

I upgraded from Qnap to UGREEN 4800+ and like it so far. They keep updating and tweaking their operating system and it looks and works so much faster.

ATTENTION.

Remember this.
There are only 2 NAS companies. One is Synology and another one is QNAP.

That are overrated and charge you arm and a leg for mediocre hardware.
UGREEN hardware is years ahead especially for the price. Whoever doesn't like their software, just take out the OS drive and put a new one and install TrueNas which is a lot better than Qnap and Synology

Whatsapp already has end to end encryption by default. One of their leadership also clarified that they don't collect people's chat metadata. So I guess Whatsapp isn't that bad nowadays. Signal would be better for privacy. And I donated money to signal in the past. However i see that Whatsapp has more features and more people are using it than signal. I use them both.

I've never had a NAS before, but have been thinking about one since the amount of pictures on my phone and laptop just keeps growing and growing. I'm wondering if the 2-Bay DXP2800 would be enough to have raid 1 drives for my pictures/videos, but also wondering if I could run a Plex server for media on the same machine, or if I would need the DXP4800 for that?

Also, I keep seeing a lot of people use Docker containers on these...I'm a web developer and use Docker on my projects, so I'm pretty familiar with it, but can someone tell me some good use cases for it on a NAS?
If you can swing it get the 4800+. You can start with 2 drives and expand when needed. As you know Docker can run just about anything if you know how, I'm not that geeky anymore.
You would run plex in docker. I run Jellyfin on a NUC I bought waiting for a Synology sale that never happened. One thing nobody mentions is the Ugreen case is metal not plastic like Synology.
I don't want to sound like I'm a fan boy because I'm not. Synology did me a favor by not having a sale or I never would have looked at these.

Frankly I'm more concerned about the gov of the country I'm in, because they can actually reach me, not some country on the other side of a sea.

You're right that the gov of your own country has the ability to cause more harm to you than foreign gov. I think it makes a lot of sense for Americans to use software and services provided by European countries (if quality is the same), because they're different jurisdiction. Proton Mail, and many other good stuff.
However, that doesn't mean it's safe to hand over the control of your NAS and data to North Korea. In the age of Internet, they can also do a lot of harm to you with your data in hand.
